Stents market driven by growing adoption of biodegradable stents

Posted On Aug, 24, 2017

Advanced gastrointestinal drug eluting stents (DES) were introduced in the market to overcome certain disadvantages such as restenosis and neo-intimal hyperplasia associated with the first generation stents namely, bare metal and plastic stents. In addition, a paradigm shift from conventional invasive procedures to minimally invasive procedures is fueling the demand for GI stents. Thus, DES is widely used since it supports minimally invasive procedures. The first biodegradable stents for use in gastrointestinal tract were made from polylactic acid.

Biodegradable stents are extremely beneficial in patients with benign digestive tract and biliary diseases. In addition, reimbursement coverage by public Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and private insurance providers, is augmenting the growth of the market. However, the lack of uniformity in regulatory policies for clinical trial is acting as a strong barrier to the market growth. In addition, certain complications such as stent thrombosis and in-stent restenosis are negatively affecting the growth of market

The role of GI stenting has increased tremendously from the past few years due to advanced technology which has improved effectiveness with reduced stent-induced complications. Biodegradable stents, in specific, has shown favorable results for the management of recurrent benign structures. One such example of biodegradable stent for gastrointestinal tract is BD Biodegradable Oesophageal Stent manufactured by Becton, Dickinson and Company. The stent provides long-term dilation effect just like self-expandable metal stents. However, this is achieved without the need for stent removal, and potentially reducing the frequency of repeat interventions.

Few companies who are operating in the gastrointetsinal stents market are Boston Scientific, Cook Medical, ELLA-CS, s.r.o., ConMed, Gore Medical, TaeWoong Medical, Hobbs Medical, Inc., C.R. Bard, Merit Endotek, Olympus America and others.
