Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a prevalent type of arrhythmia, is frequently identified in medical facilities, with an estimated 2 to 6 million individuals in the U.S. currently living with this condition. Research from the World Stroke Organization predicts that the number of AFib sufferers in the U.S. could rise to between 6 and 13 million by 2050. The likelihood of developing arrhythmia is higher among individuals of European descent compared to African Americans. The World Stroke Organization anticipates that by 2060, approximately 17.9 million people in Europe will be affected by arrhythmias. Recent research indicates that over 22% of individuals over the age of 50 with congenital heart defects are at risk of developing permanent atrial arrhythmias. Given that the incidence of cardiac arrhythmia escalates with age and women tend to live longer than men, AFib is more commonly experienced by women.

Increasing Demand For Ambulatory Monitoring Devices

The global increase in cases of AFib, ventricular fibrillation, Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), syncope, palpitations, and post-ablation follow-ups has led to a surge in the need for ambulatory monitoring devices in healthcare facilities. Continuous ECG monitoring is often favored over standard inpatient ECG monitoring due to its ability to yield more accurate results. Standard ECG tests often fail to provide a definitive diagnosis, leading to further investigations for patients. To circumvent this, ECG patches and Holter monitors are employed. The Holter monitor, which continuously records heart rhythm via several electrode patches attached to a patient’s body for 24 to 48 hours, is the device of choice globally for detecting AFib. ECG patches, used over a longer period (7–14 days), provide enhanced detection of rare arrhythmias compared to Holter monitors with shorter spans. Ambulatory cardiac monitoring devices offer superior heart monitoring capabilities, with extended detection time and high accuracy compared to traditional heart monitors. Furthermore, the escalating incidence of heart diseases due to an aging population is fueling the demand for these ambulatory cardiac monitoring devices.

Restraint: Lack Of Supportive Reimbursement Policies

ECG devices and management systems extend beyond the realm of in-patient monitoring. They encompass ambulatory monitoring devices, which may be wired or wireless, enabling continuous data tracking and offering storage capacity for data, thereby facilitating data exchange for diagnostic purposes. Despite Medicare's coverage of the initial ECG scan, it has yet to extend its coverage to telehealth services. A recent downturn in the reimbursement rates for long-term ECG monitoring and restricted access to novel ECG technologies represent significant obstacles to patient care. The most recent CPT codes 93241, 93245, 93243, and 93247 from MAC (Medicare Administrative Contractor) have led to a 74% reduction in the reimbursement rates for doctors. Holter technology is constantly evolving to meet demands, and the high price tag of these devices places a heavy burden on middle-income groups. Medicare only covers the costs of face-to-face interactive consultations and excludes remote Electrocardiogram (EKG) applications. Furthermore, Medicare only covers telehealth services that are used at a healthcare provider's office or hospital, not those used at a patient's residence.
