Drivers: Growing demand for light weight & high performance materials

CMCs have evoked a profound interest from the aerospace and automotive industry due to high strength to weight ratio, superior mechanical properties, and enormous application scope. Surging fuel prices have prompted the requirement for lightweight components in order to boost fuel efficiency. Most of the cars in today’s world run on conventional fuel, which has fostered the need for fuel-efficient vehicles. Rising environmental problems and strict pollution control guidelines have compelled automotive and aerospace component manufacturers to control automotive emissions. One of the key factor influencing fuel efficiency and vehicular pollution is the curb weight, decreasing of which drastically increases fuel efficiency and eradicates pollution. CMCs are also increasingly being used in various aircraft, rocket ships, and aerospace shuttles to create lightweight, fuelefficient, and robust structures.

Rising demand in defense applications

Ceramic composites have been extensively used in various defense applications such as engine components, armor, missile radome, and so on. Distinct characteristics such as ability to withstand high temperatures, lightweight, and resistance to corrosion provide prime advantages to ceramic composites. A majority of ceramic materials are transparent to specific types of energy, light, and others, and consequently, they are extensively used for sensor protection, infrared domes, and multi-spectral windows. Besides the optical properties, ceramics also possess good abrasion resistance and thermal stability. Silicon Nitride, a non-oxide ceramic owing to its dielectric properties and mechanical strength, is expansively utilized in manufacturing the domes for missile in air defense systems. Its mechanical strength facilitates the missile system to endure erosion and high-temperature excursions while flying at hypervelocity through the atmosphere.

Restraint: High manufacturing costs

CMC finds its use in various application segments including aerospace, defense, energy & power, etc. Established and proposed governmental regulations regarding the use of these materials in manufacturing aircraft are expected to augment CMC demand in end-use industries. Despite extraordinary benefits offered by CMC, difficulty in manufacturing and processing these materials incurs high initial investment. Despite the benefits of using CMCs, they cost significantly more than metals, even allowing for their lighter weight. The high prices have so far limited their use to high-performance applications such as jet fighters, spacecraft, racecars, missiles, aircraft engines, and similar high-temperature applications.
