Due to its resistance to high temperatures and excellent mechanical properties, PPS is classified as a high-performance thermoplastic (HPTP). However, there are various other HPTPs with similar functional properties for use in applications such as automotive and industrial. Various substitutes for PPS include epoxy, ABS, PTFE, PEI, PPA, PSU, PFA, EAP, and PVDF. Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK) is one of the fastest-growing substitute products for PPS. PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is a semicrystalline thermoplastic with a linear aromatic polymer structure. The fully recyclable material melts at 343°C and possesses exceptional mechanical properties with resistance to chemicals, wear, fatigue, and creep even at high operating temperatures where it is commonly used in service. A variety of metals such as aluminum, carbon steel, magnesium, and brass can be replaced by PEEK which offers up to 70% savings in weight. PEEK has a higher heat deflection temperature in comparison to PPS when reinforced with glass fibers. The heat deflection temperature or heat distortion temperature (HDT) is the temperature at which a polymer or plastic sample deforms under a specified load.
