Report Overview

The global automotive robotics market size was estimated at USD 4,349.9 million in 2016. Industrial robots are majorly consumed by the automotive industry and it had a market share of 38% in 2015.

China automotive robotics market

The top companies such as Japan's FANUC, Sweden's ABB, and Germany's KUKA are forming joint ventures and strategic alliances with Chinese companies to withstand the competition from competitors. Programs and initiatives such as “Industry 4.0” by the German government and “Made in China 2025” by the Chinese government will provide the necessary incentive to drive the demand for industrial robotics. Major government policies from the developed countries, for robotics and automation, operate around the subject of integrating the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud, and analytics into industrial robotics.

Product Insights

China Manufacturing 2025 strategy includes various sectors that receive attention in which high-end numerical control machinery and robotics are also included. China has been a leading production hub for automobiles for many years but when compared to other countries such as Japan and the U.S. it is low on automation and has a very less number of robots per 10,000 workers. In order to keep up with the global competitiveness and working towards CM2025, China is highly investing in robots and automation in the upcoming years.

The demand for articulated robotics is expected to grow at the highest CAGR of 14.4% from 2017 to 2025. The articulated robot is widely used in the assembly line as they are highly flexible than the other robots’ due to the number of axes present. The robot’s work depends on the application the robot is designed to do. The robotic models are created for specific applications or processes that the robot must perform depending on the industry it is employed in.

SCARA robots are estimated to grow at a CAGR of 13.7% over the forecast period, 2017 to 2025. SCARA robots are used for vertical assembly operations, loading and unloading heavy workpieces and transfer & assembly of components.

Other robots such as cartesian, cylindrical, and polar are employed in painting, and pick & place applications will require small payload but a large movement range. Whereas an assembly robot will require small workspace but will be very accurate and fast. Depending on the target application, the automotive robot will be programmed to perform specific tasks.

Application Insights

The welding application segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.3 % over the forecast period. The automotive industry utilizes robots extensively for spot welding and with the increased demand for automotive, the use of robots in the welding process has also increased. SCARA and Cartesian robots are used for the welding process due to the coordinate systems that can direct the arms of the machine.

North America automotive robotics market

The material handling segment was estimated at USD 1,005.7 million in 2017 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.9% over the forecast period, 2017 to 2025. Material Handling includes various functions such as part selection, transferring, packing, palletizing, loading and unloading, machine feeding, or disengaging.

Regional Insights

Asia Pacific automotive robotics market was valued at USD 2,509.5 million in 2016. Due to rising labor costs and the aging population in China, the country is concentrating on encouraging domestic manufacturing through automation rather than offshore manufacturing. Korea and Japan are also leading in the use and purchase of robots and the top companies are now joint ventures between Chinese and foreign companies.

North America market for automotive robotics is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 13.9% over the forecast period, 2017 to 2025. The U.S. plays a major role in automation in the automotive sector and it is ranked third in robot density.

Key Companies & Market Share Insights

The automotive robotics industry is highly competitive, the key industry competitors include ABB Robotics, Fanuc Corporation, Denso Corporation, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., and others. The automotive robotics vendors are using strategies such as acquisition, partnership, and research & development strategies to broaden their product portfolio. Fanuc Corporation and Cisco have entered into a partnership for the Internet of Things (IoT) to help them monitor the robots on the factory floor.
