Report Overview

The global brain PET-MRI systems market size was valued at USD 281.1 million in 2019 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1% from 2020 to 2027. Positron emission tomography (PET) is majorly used for neurological applications due to its advantage of providing high-resolution and 3-dimensional imaging of functional, physiologic, and molecular targets. Despite its advantage of covering and imaging the whole brain, the images captured by PET technology lacked spatial resolution, had low sensitivity, insufficient attenuation, and needed to scatter correction. Therefore, to overcome these problems, PET devices are combined with other imaging devices mainly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for accurate correspondence to the anatomic structures and to pathologic changes.

U.S. brain PET-MRI systems market size

Integration of MRI with PET is considered one of the most effective hybrid imaging systems in the field of neurology. MRI effectiveness in imaging the morphology of the brain and presence of MRI modalities for assessing physiologic and metabolic parameters like perfusion, edema, vascular supply, and functional activation is expected to contribute to its adoption along with PET systems. Therefore, combined information from MRI and PET hybrid imaging system helps in enhanced diagnosis of neurological disorders.

Brain PET-MRI systems have opened new opportunities in multiparametric neuroimaging by simultaneously observing the physiological and biochemical processes of the brain. Therefore, the installation of the device in various medical settings is increasing. As per an article by NCBI, by March 2017, approximately 30 PET-MRI scanners were installed in the U.S. Additionally, companies are conducting studies to understand the effectiveness of MRI-PET scanners on animals as well as humans.

Usage of brain PET-MRI systems for preclinical imaging is gradually increasing, which in turn is creating an opportunity for players to enter this market. In September 2016, Aspect Imaging partnered with Seoul National University to launch Preclinical PET-MRI Complete Solution at World Molecular Imaging Congress (WMIC) in New York. This system was formed combining Aspect Imaging’s M7 compact MRI and SNU novel PET insert “SimPET”. Commercial availability of this device is helping scientists to conduct research in different fields including neurology.

Despite various advantages provided by brain PET-MRI systems in the field of neurology, the development of this device involves various challenges. The three major challenges faced while combining PET MRI units are- placing PET system with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) into a high magnetic field, proper construction of PET-MRI system, and developing attenuation maps for PET images. PET detector elements create issues around the magnetic field and hence impact the device performance. Currently, measures are being taken to limit this issue. These measures involve usage of optical fibers to guide away light from the magnetic field, usage of avalanche photodiode devices (APDs) instead of PMT, and protecting PMT from the magnetic field. Therefore, challenges faced in developing an effective PET-MRI system may impact market growth.
