Report Overview

The global continuous peripheral nerve block (cPNB) catheters market size was estimated at USD 181.4 million in 2017. It is expected to expand at a CAGR of 6.2% over the forecast period. Growing geriatric population is translating into staggering orthopedic procedure volume, which in turn is fueling the demand for postoperative pain management solutions. In addition, cPNBs are increasingly replacing other regional anesthesia techniques applicable to major orthopedic surgeries. Growing surgery volume coupled with the soaring need for effective postoperative care is one of the key trends in stoking market growth.

U.S. cPNB catheters market size

A spiraling number of joint replacements and arthroplasties over the last decade can be attributed to the rising prevalence of osteoarthritis, which is the most common joint disorder. According to the International Association for the Study of Pain, around 10 to 15 % of the total population worldwide suffered from symptomatic osteoarthritis in 2016. Aging cohort and the rising prevalence of osteoarthritis are the major factors responsible for the continual surge in the number of orthopedic surgeries around the world.

CPNB catheters also find application in case of major extremity amputations. Lower extremity amputations, driven by diabetic foot ulceration, form a significant number of cases. According to the International Diabetes Federation, the global diabetes population is estimated to rise from 424.9 million in 2017 to 628.6 million by 2045. The upward trend in the volume of amputations, across the world, is expected to propel the market.

Post-operative discomfort is one of the major problems experienced by patients who have undergone joint replacements or arthroplasties and limb amputations. Around one-third of patients experience moderate-to-severe postoperative pain after ambulatory surgery. Combatting this with the administration of long-acting opioids has been associated with various side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and disturbance of sleep.  In contrast, the use of cPNB catheters for regional anesthesia yields better postsurgical outcomes as well as minimizes the side effects of long-acting opioids. Thus, decreasing preference for opioid use in pain management is responsible for accelerating the overall growth of catheters.

Insertion Technique Insights

On the basis of the insertion technique, the ultrasound segment held the largest share of 48.2% in the market. This can be attributed to associated advantages including improved block quality, faster and longer block duration, and the need for a lower dose of local anesthetic. This technique is increasingly adopted for pediatric regional anesthesia due to the lower pain index associated with ultrasound-guided insertion.

On the other hand, the nerve stimulation segment is poised to register a sluggish rate of 1.9% over the forecast period. This being the oldest available technology (after blind advancement) for catheter placement is slowly becoming outdated due to the introduction of new advanced technologies such as ultrasound-guided catheter placement.

Indication Insights

Lower extremity surgeries held a larger share in the cPNB catheters market owing to the increasing number of procedures involving the use of these devices. Effective post-operative care along with a rise in lower-limb surgeries has a considerable impact on the overall postoperative outcome in terms of decreased hospital stay, faster mobilization, less postoperative nausea, and lower incidence of readmissions.

cPNB catheters are increasingly being employed for effective pain management in major upper limb surgeries, including total shoulder replacement, rotator cuff repair, and elbow replacements that involve chronic post-operative pain. This trend is causing the upper extremity surgeries segment to expand at a steady rate during the forecast period.

End-use Insights

The ambulatory surgical centers segment is likely to witness an exponential growth rate of 7.2% over the forecast period. The advantages of day-care surgery centers include shorter waiting lists, quicker discharge, reduced overall procedural cost, and treatment for a higher number of patients. With healthcare expenditure burden in developed countries and rising awareness regarding the merits of these centers, the number of ASCs is projected to increase. This, in turn, will trigger the uptake of cPNB catheters.

Hospitals held the dominant share of 58.5% in the market. Technologically advanced medical devices are being extensively used in hospitals to deliver better patient care. Treatment in hospitals comes with a good amount of reimbursement. Generally, they are the only healthcare providers in developing countries, which lack ambulatory surgical centers.

Regional Insights

North America held the largest share and was valued at USD 96.3 million in 2017. This can be attributed to an increasing target population coupled with a growing prevalence of lifestyle-associated diseases, such as diabetes and orthopedic conditions. Other factors contributing to the overall revenue generation are a well-developed reimbursement structure and a growing number of day-care surgery centers.

Global cPNB catheters market share

The Europe region is anticipated to post a noteworthy CAGR of 6.4% over the forecast period. Europe records the highest number of surgeries, which supports the usage of continuous peripheral nerve block catheters to manage postoperative discomfort. The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia & Pain Therapy (ESRA) recommends the use of peripheral nerve blocks for acute postsurgical pain in adults as well as pediatric patients, the latter receiving a higher percentage of cPNBs. Another factor boosting the adoption of these devices is an increase in daycare/ambulatory surgeries across the region.

Continuous Peripheral Nerve Block Catheters Market Share Insights

The market is highly competitive in nature, with a limited number of players accounting for the majority of market share. Notable participants such as B. Braun Melsungen AG; Teleflex Incorporated; Halyard Health, Inc.; Pajunk GMBH; and Vygon, represent nearly 65.0% of the market. Players are focusing on the development of technologically advanced devices, which offer comfort to their users. New product development, strategic alliances, promotional activities, and acquisitions are instrumental in keeping the market rivalry high.

Market leaders, Pajunk and B. Braun being the first to introduce catheter-over-needle technology, are regarded as market innovators. Risks and costs associated with the development of novel products are increasing over time and market leaders are better positioned with the required resources to carry out R&D activities. For instance, B. Braun was the first company to introduce catheter-over-needle technology for performing nerve blocks, thereby gaining a competitive advantage over other players.
