Immersion Cooling Market Dynamics

Driver: Rising Demand for Data Center Infrastructure

Data centers are facilities that contain information technology equipment such as networking computers and servers that are used for data storage, data processing, and communications. Large data centers generally consist of shells stacked with racks of IT equipment and servers on a raised floor with temperature control systems and power backups. The primary role of data centers is to store, process, and communicate data required for various information services such as emails, streaming videos, online collaboration, social media, and scientific computing. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global internet traffic increased by around 40% between February and mid-April 2020 during the COVID-19 containment measures and was primarily driven by the growth in online gaming, video conferencing, video streaming, and social networking.

The boosting of various digital technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and 5G along with their applications in several industries, including manufacturing, communication, medicine, transportation, and education, has increased the need for data processing, storage, and transmission. New business models and technologies are changing how businesses access software and hardware. Cloud computing or services allow individuals and companies to access on-demand IT services over a network, whereas data storage and processing take place in remote data centers.

Driver: Increasing Demand for Cost-Effective and Energy-Efficient Cooling Solutions

Data centers use different IT equipment or devices to provide various services such as scientific computing, streaming video, social media, email, and online collaboration. The IT devices are powered by electricity. Servers provide logic and computations in response to various information requests, whereas storage devices store the data and files that are needed to meet these requests. Network devices are required to connect the data center and the internet, which enables the outgoing and incoming data flows. The electricity used by these devices is eventually converted into heat, which must be removed from the data center using cooling equipment that operates on electricity. As mentioned earlier, the cooling infrastructure in data center facilities accounts for significant operating expenses as well as about half of the total energy consumption.

The number of internet users has grown over the years, which has increased the demand for data center services. This trend is expected to continue over the forecast period as the world consumes more and more data. Thus, as more data is being created, collected, and stored for processing, the server loads are becoming more demanding and the rack densities are increasing. The power density per rack is a critical number in data center capacity planning, design, cooling, and power provisioning. One of the major reasons for rising densities is an increase in compute-intensive workloads due to technologies such as AI, IoT, augmented reality, and cryptocurrencies. These technologies generate a massive amount of data, which puts excess pressure on the cooling systems responsible for maintaining the compute loads.

Restraint: Requirement for Specialized and Additional Infrastructure

A significant number of data centers across the globe use air cooling systems owing to their low costs. One of the major disadvantages of immersion cooling over air cooling is its costly setup. The cost of immersion cooling systems is high as they involve dielectric fluid, customized tubs, piping, pumps, and heat transfer systems. These systems require more precise monitoring instrumentation. Moreover, converting an existing data center into an immersion cooling one requires a rack-by-rack conversion, which further translates into additional costs. The following figure represents the costs of various components as a percentage of the total cost of an immersion cooling system.

As depicted in the above figure, dielectric fluid and dry cooler account for the majority of the expense in an immersion cooling system. Dielectric fluid is used to cool the IT equipment, whereas coolers are used to cool the dielectric fluid while it cools the equipment. Apart from the high capital expenditure, immersion cooling systems require data centers and IT administrators to adopt a new management framework and learn new skills, which also represents a significant undertaking.
