Intravenous Iron Drugs Market Dynamics

Driver: Rising global prevalence of target diseases

An increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, chronic renal disorders, IBD, cancer, and acute & chronic infections, has been facilitating a significant demand for intravenous iron drugs. A global increase in the prevalence of cancer is one of the major factors boosting market expansion. According to the Global Cancer Observatory, in 2020, there were around 50.5 million individuals with some form of cancer, and more than 19 million new cancer cases were reported annually. It was also indicated that one in six women and one in five men are likely to develop cancer at some point in their lives. The most common cancer forms among both sexes are breast, lung, colorectal, prostate, and stomach cancer. Anemia is typically observed among blood, bone, cervical, colon, and prostate cancers. Thus, cancer patients form a large chunk of the population that requires intravenous iron drugs. Moreover, growth in the prevalence of chronic renal disorder is another factor expected to propel the demand for iron drugs. Other target diseases, such as diabetes, chronic health disease, and celiac disease, among others, or their treatment processes may lead to iron deficiency anemia. This significant increase in the diabetic population is anticipated to create a major demand for intravenous iron drugs.

Driver: Benefits of intravenous iron drugs

The superiority of IV iron treatment, comparable higher & faster absorption of intravenous iron drugs, lower adverse effects, and other advantages over oral iron drugs are increasing the adoption of IV iron drugs for the treatment of anemia and other target diseases. For instance, around 50% of patients having oral iron drugs complain of gastrointestinal adverse effects, which increased the adoption of intravenous iron formulations in the treatment process. Moreover, patients who have gastrointestinal bleeding or inflammatory bowel disease, patients undergoing kidney dialysis, and those with celiac disease are mostly treated with intravenous iron drugs. A major drawback of oral iron drugs is their risk of severe adverse effects. Common adverse effects include digestive problems such as stomach aches, constipation, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. An overdose of oral iron drugs may also induce convulsions, shallow or rapid breathing, tiredness or weakness, fatigue, pale skin, and bluish skin or fingernails. The use of intravenous iron drugs, on the other hand, has been shown to bring about increased iron adoption by the body, facilitating Erythropoiesis-stimulating Agents (ESAs) to function in an enhanced manner to improve the anemic condition. Other advantages of intravenous iron drugs are the preservation of heart health and the ability to be used by dialysis patients, especially those undergoing hemodialysis. The adverse effects of oral iron drugs are, hence, anticipated to facilitate a switch to intravenous iron drugs during the forecast period.

Restraint: Negative effects associated with iron drugs

Although iron drugs are vital for the treatment of anemia, their disadvantages may hamper market growth. Common adverse effects associated with all forms of iron drugs are constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. There is also a high risk of drugs interacting with other substances, including drugs that are typically dose-dependent. Liquid iron supplements can cause reversible discoloration of teeth. The use of intramuscular dosages can cause pain and brown discoloration at the injection site. The use of iron sulfate can increase the chances of triggering adverse effects. Iron overdose has also been termed as one of the major causes of toxicological deaths in children below 5 years of age. In some cases, iron poisoning may cause mortality and short- or long-term morbidity. The use of iron drugs is also restricted in patients suffering from bacterial infections to avoid treatment complications.
