Meat Substitutes Market Dynamics

Driver: Increasing health awareness and environmental issues

Meat production accounts for over 14.5% of the total global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, using 70% of agricultural land, including a third of arable land needed for crop production, owing to which it is also a key driver of deforestation, loss of wildlife, land degradation. The 2014 IPCC report on climate change emissions identified changing diets as a significant, though undeveloped area for action. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), animals in U.S. factory farms produce about 500 million tons of manure each year. With no animal sewage processing plants, it is most often stored in waste “lagoons” (which can be seen in aerial views of factory farms), or it gets sprayed over fields. Runoff from factory farms and livestock grazing are among the leading causes of pollution of rivers and lakes. The EPA notes that bacteria and viruses can be carried by the runoff and that groundwater can be contaminated.

Opportunity: TVP application dominated the global meat substitutes market and experienced the highest penetration in the market ahead of tofu-based products and tofu. Regional preferences characterize the meat substitute demand in the regional markets. Tofu and tofu-based products are widespread in the West while wheat-based products are widespread in the Asia Pacific region. Widespread consumption of TVP across the globe is highlighted by its high market penetration. Seitan and mycoprotein are relatively less prevalent in the global market at present, as illustrated by their low penetration.

Restraint: Adverse effects of processed food

Meat substitute products use textured vegetable proteins as one of the ingredients. To enhance appearance and taste, these products may also contain preservatives, food dyes, or artificial flavoring materials. All these additives are known to have an adverse effect on the health. The use of some types of food dyes has been banned in Europe because of their link with hyperactivity in children and effects on the nervous system. Red 40, which is widely used in certain meat products is one of several artificial food coloring chemicals that may pose health risks. Phosphate salts, which are used as emulsifiers in food processing, are known to affect the kidneys. Emulsifiers are necessary as they stabilize oil and water mixtures. Sodium phosphate and potassium phosphate are examples of this type of food additives. Potassium phosphate is known to cause allergic reactions.
