Report Overview

The global peri-implantitis market size was valued at USD 0.71 billion in 2019 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7% from 2020 to 2027.  Peri-implantitis is a site-specific infectious disease that causes an inflammatory process in soft tissues, and bone loss around an osseointegrated implant in function. Osseointegrated dental implants have become an increasingly popular modality of treatment for the replacement of absent or lost teeth. Dental implants have high rates of long-term survival (greater than 10 years) when used to support various types of dental prostheses. However, the long-term success of dental implants is not the same or as high as their survival, as functional implants and their restorations may be subject to mechanical and biological complications.

U.S. non-surgical peri-implantitis market size

Some of the major reasons that increase the risk of peri-implantitis include smoking, poor oral hygiene, history of periodontitis, biomechanical overload (leading to high stress and micro-fractures causing loss of osseointegration around the neck of the implant), poor quality bone, incorrect implant position, implant overloading, and diabetes. The rising demand for dental implants for many dental treatments has also brought in associated disease complications like peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis. These conditions affect the tissues surrounding the implant and lead to bone loss and damaging implant function. Peri-implantitis is classified into four stages depending upon the degree of bone loss that has occurred in the implanted teeth. Depending on the degree of osseous involvement, the dentist decides the treatment goal to arrest the disease progression, regeneration, and replacement. The major setback is that bone loss is only apparent in radiographs when 30% of the bone mass is lost, which can make early detection difficult.

According to NCBI, the prevalence of peri-implantitis was 34.0% on the patient level and 21% on the implant level over an average follow-up of 2 years in the U.S. The rising demand for dental implants is a major factor contributing to the growth of the market for peri-implantitis. People having a history of periodontal disease is more susceptible to peri-implantitis. According to CDC, 47.2% of adults aged 30 years in the U.S. have some form of periodontal disease in 2019 with the condition being more common in men than women as they are more prone to smoking and health conditions like diabetes.

Technological advancements like mechanical debridement combined with laser decontamination, surgical debridement with guided bone regeneration (GBR) for reparation of bony and soft-tissue defects, and diagnostic genetic biomarker techniques have improved clinical outcomes and selective calculus removal. These aforementioned factors are expected to boost the peri-implantitis treatment market.

Method Type Insights

The surgical segment dominated the market for peri-implantitis and held the largest revenue share of 58.0% in 2019. The segment is expected to reciprocate a significant CAGR over the forecast period. Based on method type, the market is segmented into surgical and non-surgical methods. The surgical method is further segmented into bone regeneration, open flap debridement, and implantoplasty. The non-surgical method is sub-segmented into mechanical debridement, laser debridement, antibiotics, and others. The surgical method is considered as the gold standard to treat peri-implantitis as it provides comprehensive debridement and decontamination of the affected implant. Surgical bone regeneration or resective surgical procedure is reciprocating the highest CAGR over the forecast period as the technique provides encouraging treatment outcomes in the treatment of peri-implantitis around implants.

Global peri-implantitis market share

The laser debridement non-surgical method segment is expected to witness the highest CAGR over the forecast period as lasers can efficiently handle small areas of the implant surface which cannot be reached through mechanical methods. Er:YAG (Erbium-Doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet), CO2 (Carbon Dioxide Laser), and Diode lasers provide clinically significant reductions of pocket-probing depth and gains in clinical attachment level as well as the complete elimination of bacteria. These non-surgical techniques are gaining momentum due to its non-invasive nature, lesser recovery time, and reduced complications.

Regional Insights

Europe dominated the peri-implantitis market and accounted for the largest revenue share of 40.0% in 2019 and is expected to showcase a significant CAGR in the forecast period. This is attributed to the presence of the rising patient population with periodontal conditions, technological advancements, and growing awareness about dental implants and associated disease among the population. The National Health Services in Europe bears the cost of dental implants and its related treatments for patients suffering from aggressive periodontal conditions which affect the supporting structures of teeth. These are some of the factors contributing to the growth of the market for peri-implantitis in the region.

In APAC, the market for peri-implantitis is expected to witness the highest CAGR of 10.7% over the forecast period owing to a large population, favorable government initiatives, and availability of developed health care facilities in these countries. Populous countries like India and China suffer from a heavy burden of oral diseases and Dental Implants (DIs) are prescribed widely by dental practitioners to replace lost natural teeth and are gaining prominence. Moreover, India and China are currently the largest tobacco-producing and consuming countries having the lowest smoking awareness. These are the factors that are expected to boost the market for peri-implantitis in the region.

Key Companies & Market Share Insights

The market for peri-implantitis is highly competitive in nature. One of the key factors driving competitiveness among market players in the rapid advancement in technology to develop anti-infective drugs and solutions. In addition, many companies are partnering with each other to develop drugs to introduce their products faster in the market. For instance, in January 2017, the Pfizer acquired the development and commercialization rights to AstraZeneca’s small molecule anti-invectives business, primarily outside the U.S. for approximately USD 1.0 billion.
