Industry Insights

The global perlite market size was valued at USD 891.1 million in 2016 and is expected to reach USD 1,591.4 million by 2025, ascending at an estimated CAGR of 7.0% over the next 8 years. Factors, such as increasing application in the construction sector and increasing demand for high-temperature insulation from the oil & gas sector, are likely to trigger the market.

The industrial mineral is formed naturally by means of hydration of obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass. Perlite expands greatly when heated sufficiently. Its typical composition includes 0.5-1.5% calcium oxide (CaO); 0.2-0.7% magnesium oxide (MgO); 0.5-2% iron oxide (Fe2O3); 3-5% potassium oxide (K2O); 3-4% sodium oxide (Na2O); 12-15% aluminum oxide (Al2O3); and 70-75% silicon dioxide (SiO2).

U.S. perlite market

The U.S. market was valued at USD 120.53 million in 2016 and is predicted to ascend at a CAGR of 7.6% from 2017 to 2025. Huge investment in infrastructure improvement and the agricultural sector by the U.S. government is anticipated to boost demand in the region. The U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates in December 2016, which could result in faster buying activity in the housing segment; which, in turn, is also projected to be a major factor for industry growth.

Countries such as the U.S., Greece, Turkey, Italy, China, and India were among the largest consumers of the industrial mineral in 2016, on account of the growing construction industry and rising investments in infrastructure. Perlite is used to manufacture bricks, insulation roof decks, concrete, lightweight cement plasters, and floor fills.

Application Insights

Construction products application dominated the global market with a share of over 31.1% in 2016 in terms of revenue. The segment is estimated to occupy a market share of over 32.5% in the market by 2025. The rising demand for durable, lightweight, and efficient raw materials in the construction industry is expected to boost market growth over the forecast period.

The industrial mineral is used in various construction & building products, such as ceiling tiles, insulation, mortar, concrete, and lightweight plasters, on account of its low cost and low density. Asia Pacific has dominated the global construction industry in the past few years and is expected to hold the largest market share in the construction industry on account of increasing infrastructural development in emerging economies such as China, India, and Japan.

In horticulture & agriculture, the mineral is used to prevent soil compaction on account of its high permeability. It is also used in hydroponics, i.e. cultivating crops without soil. In hydroponics, the roots of the plant are immersed in a mineral solution to provide the necessary nutrients. Perlite improves the fertility of soil when introduced in small quantities.

Perlite has various beneficial properties. It is non-toxic, fireproof, and lightweight in nature; available in different sizes; and can be expanded to the desired density. It can also hold numerous liquids such as chemical mixtures, oil, and water. On account of these properties, the mineral is employed in various industrial applications such as abrasives, well cements, plastic fillers, and cryogenic tanks.

The mineral is utilized for air and liquid filtration as it helps in achieving high purity with high flow rates. Perlite aids can be customized to achieve increased purity, production, and flow rates. Perlite aids are mainly employed for filtering gelatinous slurries and highly viscous liquids since these require high flow rates. They are usually employed with rotary vacuum filters for air or liquid filtration purposes.

Others application segment includes personal care, environment, soap, toothpaste, and detergents. Owing to the inert and sterile nature of perlite aids, they are also utilized in filtering liquids in food & beverage and pharmaceutical industries.

Regional Insights

Automotive and construction industries in North America are registering positive growth signs. Reduction in unemployment rates, passage of major infrastructure-related bills, and reduced prices due to shale gas flooding the market are some of the reasons triggering the growth of the construction industry in the region. Rising living standards and the increasing demand for accommodation are expected to further propel the market over the forecast period.

The construction sector is a major contributor to the overall GDP in almost all European countries. The construction industry in the region is poised for growth due to increased household disposable income and low-interest rates. The formation of European Industrial Map and conservative efforts undertaken by the European Union to maintain its edge as increased government investments and initiatives have benefitted the European agriculture and construction markets and are expected to continue to do so over the forecast period.

Global perlite market

The agriculture sector in Italy is highly diversified in nature with various crops being cultivated in the region, including protein crops, oil seeds, olives, and cereals. The country is also known for its extensive vineyards, which contribute to about 9.9% of the total crops cultivated in Italy. The Apennine and Alpine regions of the country comprise the most diversified agricultural farms. Agricultural diversification in Italy ranges from marginal farming to intensive high-productivity farming. This, in turn, is expected to increase the demand in the region over the next few years.

The rising infrastructural development in Asia Pacific and increasing government investment in mega projects, such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Navi Mumbai International Airport, Hyderabad Metro Rail, and Japan’s maglev High-Speed Rail, are expected to boost the demand in the construction industry in the region.

Competitive Insights

The industry is highly competitive in nature due to the presence of several global market players. Global players are investing in research & development activities for innovating and producing new application-specific products to gain a competitive edge. Companies such as Gulf Perlite LLC, Carolina Perlite Company, Aegean Perlite SA, Supreme Perlite Company, and Bergama Perlite have achieved forward integration by establishing their presence in the manufacturing and distribution sectors. Companies such as Saudi Perlite Industries, The Schundler Company, and Genper Group mainly supply end-use applications.
