Metal additive manufacturing can fabricate lightweight but strong structures, produce complex designs, and maintain small volumes. These factors extend its application scope in various end-use industries including medical, aerospace, automotive, and consumer products. 3D printing technologies are subject to challenges including the consistency of quality, limited multi-material printing capabilities, narrow range of materials, high material costs, size, and scalability.

Furthermore, the rising advancements in technology and materials science to overcome these limitations are expected to drive the larger adoption of additive manufacturing materials and technology in various end-use industries. The procedure of additive manufacturing is slow as it involves hours per vertical inch of component, which is adequate for prototyping but is not sufficient for production at a large scale.
