Industry Insights

The U.S. antistatic agents market size was valued at USD 55.9 million in 2016. It is anticipated to expand at a CAGR of 4.8% from 2017 to 2025. The demand is driven by increasing adoption of packaging methods to reduce wastage during transportation and antistatic handling caused by buildup of static charges in plastic packaging materials. A shift from plastic packaging to paper and paperboard packaging is expected to pose a challenge to the anticipated market growth.

U.S. antistatic agents market

Antistatic agents are used for preventing stacking of static charges on product surfaces such as plastic and biopolymers. Additives are known to exist in different forms such as nonionic, anionic, cationic, and amphoteric. Anionic additives include sodium alkyl sulphonates, sulphonamides, and sodium alkyl phosphates.

Plastics are increasingly used in food packaging industries as they are lightweight and easy for transportation. As the food packaging industry is rapidly growing, use of various types of plastics is increasing proportionally. In U.S., the packaging industry is the most significant end-user of plastic resins. As organized food retail sector is surging, the use of plastic resins in packaging is further growing. As a result, problems associated with static electricity in plastic industry are abundant; necessitating the use of antistatic agents to counter static discharge problems.

Another factor driving product demand is the growing bioplastics market. In 2009, the U.S. government introduced Farm Bill, urging federal agencies to buy bioplastics, which require functional additives such as antioxidants and antistatic agents.

Application Insights

High-density polyethylene is used in manufacturing commercial and consumer packaging bags. Antistatic agents are used in the manufacturing process of these bags as they help in reducing dust buildups and enhance the production process.

Polypropylene is widely used plastic and characterized by properties such as high melting point and resistance to acids. On account of its opacity and transparency, it is highly preferred for product labeling and enhancing the image of the product. As demand for nutrient content labeling is increasing, manufacturers are increasingly using polypropylene for the ease of product labeling.

Product Insights

The glycerol monostearate (GMS) segment in the U.S. antistatic agents market was valued at USD 15,213.3 thousand in 2016. GMS is an internal antistatic agent and free from amines and amides. It is produced by the reaction of glycerol with fatty acids of vegetable origin and recommended for short-term antistatic performance. It is suitable for blending with polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) and can also be used for PVC.

U.S. antistatic agents market

Production of ethoxylated fatty acid amine products takes place when tallow amines, coco amine, amino acids, stearyl amines, oleylamine, and similar others react with ethylene oxide in the presence of a catalyst during the ethoxylation process. Ethoxylate amines are best suited for high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

End-use Insights

The food industry is a vital economic force in the U.S. and is witnessing rapid growth owing to increased consumption of ready-to-eat food. This, in turn, is driving the plastic industry as a result of increased application in food packaging. Ethoxylated amines, glycerol esters, and other amides are used as antistatic additives to prevent potential hazards during the transportation of packaged goods. As end-user industries are increasingly preferring antistatic agents, the market is expected to grow over the forecast period.

Antistatic additives are used during the manufacturing process of some products, such as gloves, grounders, mats, polybags, bubble bags, shielding bags, and labels. They are also used to produce automotive components such as stat guns, straps, cleaners, apron, and autoclavable clogs. In the textile industry, sprays, fabrics, synthetic fibers, and lubricants are produced using these products.

U.S. Antistatic Agents Market Share Insights

A fragmented vendor landscape makes this market highly competitive. Continuous innovation in product required by the application and end-use industry to serve specifically tailored solutions is the most comprehensive market trend. International players are focusing on expanding their product portfolio to cater to the broad range of customer needs. Thus, an intense rivalry is expected among players over the coming years.

The market is characterized by a large number of global market players. Some of these are The 3M Company; Akzo Nobel N.V.; BASF Corporation; Croda International Plc.; Arkema, Inc.; Ampacet Corporation; and Evonik Corporation. Majority of the existing players produce glycerol esters, ethoxylated amines, amine-free, and diethanolamides-based antistatic additives that find use in the polyethylene and polypropylene manufacturing processes.
