Industry Insights

The global waste to diesel market size was valued at USD 390 million in 2016. Globally, increasing demand from transportation, jet airways, construction, and automotive sector is projected to be a key factor driving market growth over the forecast period. Rising concern for recycle management is expected to propel the industry growth.

Immense application of diesel produced from waste in diesel boilers, ships, tractors & trucks, diesel power generators, and construction machinery among others is expected to boost the market over the next eight years. Stringent regulations by EPA concerning the hazardous effects of garbage are projected to propel the recycling industry over the coming period.

U.S. waste to diesel market

Increasing R&D to reduce the costs associated with the installation of processing plants might positively impact the market demand. In April 2017, Ecofuel Technologies, a Michigan based company, and chemist from Indian Institute of Science came together to develop a mobile reactor to convert plastic to diesel.

Technologies used for processing treatment may vary based on the type of waste, energy efficiency and lead time. The use of right technology for processing different types of scrap is a major hindrance for the market growth. Increasing investments on waste to diesel facilities are anticipated to augment the demand over the forecast period.

Source Insights

Municipal waste was the dominant source segment in 2016 and accounted for around 47% of the overall industry for the same year, and is expected to remain the largest segment across the forecast period. Increasing plants for the processing of municipal solid waste (MSW) is projected to propel the segment growth from 2017 to 2025.

The feed stock sources used to convert into fuel are dispose food, plastics, agro useless material, glass, metal, cotton scrap, construction, rubber, leather, textiles, wood, paper, and semi-solid waste among others. These unwanted wastes are collected from household, industries, retailers, and agriculture through garbage collectors, suppliers, and transfer stations.

Regulations by the U.S. EPA for cost-effective recovery of waste materials and reduction of garbage, particularly in industrial and commercial sectors will positively impact the market growth. Rising liquefaction facilities for the conversion of plastic into diesel is projected to fuel the industry.

Ease in the processing of disposed plastic to liquid forms of fuel is anticipated to boost the market. Initiatives by companies such as Dow Chemical and Klean Industries collaborated to construct waste recovery facilities in North America are projected to propel the market growth.

Technology Insights

Pyrolysis dominated the technology segment in 2016 and is expected to reach a net worth exceeding USD 500 million. Different technologies used for processing waste are gasification, pyrolysis, incineration, and depolymerisation. Increasing environmental concern regarding the use of non-renewable energy resources is anticipated to augment the market demand.

Growing developments in the manufacturing to produce large amounts of diesel by increasing the production capacity of renewable diesel plants is projected to propel the market over the coming years.

Global waste to diesel market

In December 2016, Solena Group and Alitalia came together to construct a plane which converts solid waste to jet fuel. This fuel is expected to be used by the aircraft of Alitalia. In March 2017, Diamond Green Diesel facility of Valero Energy Corporation and Darling Ingredients Inc. expanded its annual production capacity of renewable diesel by using Honeywell’s UOP eco fining technological process.

The use of agricultural and wood waste to produce energy using gasification technology is driving the market. In June 2017, Statkraft, a producer of renewable energy, developed a process, which uses hydrothermal liquefaction technology using high temperatures and pressures to generate biofuel from wood chippings and other solid organic waste.

Regional Insights

Europe was the leading regional segment and accounted for around 42% of the total revenue in 2016. The region is a mature market owing to the presence of several numbers of global companies. These companies are involved in continuous research & development for new and better technologies.

North America is expected to be the fastest growing regional segment. Growing garbage collectors and waste transfer stations in the U.S., Mexico, and other regions of North America is expected to propel the market growth. In December 2016, public works and services ministry initiated a tender to build a solid waste treatment plant in the Mexican city.

Rising consumption of diesel as a fuel from the U.S., China, Japan, India, and Mexico because of growing automotive industry in these countries is projected to propel the market over the forecast period. Increasing processing plants in various regions including North America & Europe and the rising technological advancements in regions, such as Asia-Pacific is anticipated to drive the market over the coming period.

Rising investments for the construction of a renewable facilities and improving the environment is projected to propel the market growth. In January 2016, Dubai municipality has proposed to build the largest WTE plant in MEA by 2020.

Competitive Insights

The industry is highly competitive and fairly concentrated. Key participants include Covanta Energy Corp., Foster Wheeler A.G., Plastic2Oil Inc., Green Alliance, Klean Industries Inc., and Ventana Ecogreen Inc. among others

Rising mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures by companies to produce fuel from waste are being undertaken as an attempt to strengthen the presence and gain industry share. For instance, Statkraft and Sodra, a forestry group in Norway, entered into a joint venture known as Silva Green Fuel for the investment decisions for the pilot plant in Tofte, Norway.

Companies such as Covanta Energy Corp., Solena Group, and Foster Wheeler Group have adopted expansion strategies to gain the share and strengthen their presence in the industry. Expansions & investment strategies are undertaken by many companies to increase their production capacity and enter into emerging markets.

Industries have adopted partnership strategies with raw material suppliers as well as manufacturing plants to maintain their market presence. Companies such as Alphakat GmbH, Klean Industries, and Covanta Energy Corp. are among the few companies having high integration the value chain.
