Recent outbreak of COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of access and availability of water, sanitation and hygiene. Use of clean water has helped people to fight against the pandemic and preserve the health & well-being of individuals across the world. For instance, in response to COVID-19, South Africa installed water supply points across the country for washing hands.

Based on the end-user, water treatment as service market has been categorized into industrial and municipal. COVID-19 outbreak hampered the industrial segment as demand for water services declined due to lockdowns and restrictions in commercial and industrial facilities. The service such as new installations, designing, and maintenance observed declining trend in 2020.

With rising industrial production, generation of wastewater has increased at rapid pace in recent years. Processing of pesticides, rare metals, chemicals, food & beverage products and other harmful materials result in generation of effluents, wherein it can impact environment if not treated or disposed properly. Thus, water treatment services are projected to observe growing demand with rising industrial production over the coming years.

Based on industrial end-use, the market has been classified into metals & mining, oil & gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, and power generation among others. Rise in levels of hazardous wastewater owing to exploration and refining of oil & gas and metal products is projected to push the demand for water services in these industries. These exploration activities are regulated by various government bodies around the world; therefore, it is mandatory for companies to treat the wastewater.

Wastewater is an undesirable by-product generated during the exploration process; the companies need to treat it before releasing into surface water or sanitary sewer. Some of the sources of wastewater includes petroleum refining, organic chemicals manufacturing, oil & gas extraction, iron & steel industry, textile mills, pulp & paper production, electric power plants, battery production, and industrial oil contamination among others.

On regional basis, Asia Pacific is projected to remain the fastest growing market over the coming years. The presence of large industries such as iron & steel, aluminum, vehicles & component manufacturing, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and textiles in China, India, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asian countries is projected to provide boost to the water treatment as service market.

Asia Pacific is characterized by increasing population in China and India, emerging middle class and rising income levels. Further, rising awareness associated with clean drinking water and environment is projected to attract the demand for various water treatment services such as installations of new lines & infrastructure, consulting, maintenance, operation and process control among others.

Water treatment as a service market is highly competitive in nature. Players in the market are competing with each other through acquisitions of new projects and clients. For instance, in December 2019, SPML Infra secured a wastewater treatment project worth USD 30 million. As per this project, SPML is responsible for design, engineering, development, construction and testing of 30 MLD sewage treatment plant in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, India.

In March 2020, France-based SUEZ signed a large water treatment project in Siberia. The company has signed a 10-year agreement with Irkutsk Oil Company, an oil & gas producer in Russia. Under this agreement, SUEZ will supply critical water technology to company’s new polymer plant and replacement for duration of the service agreement. SUEZ will treat wastewater using three technologies namely thermal vapor recompression (TVR), electrodialysis reversal (EDR), and membrane bioreactor (MBR).

Some of the key players in the market include SUEZ, Veolia Water Technologies, Thermax, Evoqua Water Technologies, Xylem, Ecolab, VА Тесh Wаbаg, GE Water, Acciona, Hydro International, Trojan Technologies, American Water, Pentair, SWA Water Australia, Orenco Systems, and Aquatech International among others.
