The pricing and cost analysis helps in deriving and forecasting the actual cost of products or services over the forecast period. It considers all the cost components and provides a competitive edge during supplier negotiations. Moreover, the outcome helps procurement leaders understand detailed and fact-based cost drivers for the category.

In this blister packaging procurement intelligence report, we have estimated the pricing of the key cost components. Raw materials, labor, R&D, and SG&A form the largest cost component of blister packaging. Operational costs include labor and fixed costs, depreciation, R&D costs, SG&A costs, insurance costs, and profit margins, among others, which account for around 40% of the total costs. Blister packaging manufacturing cost is primarily dominated by the expenses associated with raw materials, constituting more than 60% of the total manufacturing cost. The main contributors to the raw material costs are the forming film and lidding materials. The forming films, which are typically composed of PVC, experienced a significant price surge in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19 and disruptions in the supply chain. Nevertheless, the prices gradually stabilized starting in 2021.

Every organization and its procurement team look forward to negotiating the best deal while procuring a set of products or subscribing to services. Rate benchmarking involves price/cost comparison of more than one set of products/services to analyze the most efficient combination that can potentially help the procurement team in getting the optimum rate.

When analyzing rate benchmarking of blister packaging, the type of forming film plays a crucial role. In our study, we compared the rates of six different forming films: polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS). Through rate benchmarking analysis, we discovered that PVDC and CTFE forming films have a price per unit area that is 60% to 80% higher than PP, PET, PS, and PVC forming films. Among these options, PVC forming films offer the lowest price per unit area and demonstrate an 80% better water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) compared to PVDC, CTFE, and PP forming films. Due to its high cost-efficiency ratio in terms of price per unit area, PVC films are the preferred choice of forming film material for blister packaging suppliers.

Labor cost is one of the key components of the total incurred costs while offering a product or service. Therefore, an organization must decide on whether the focus category should be retained in-house or outsourced if the organization is providing its products or services at competitive prices. If the organization decides in favor of outsourcing, it must understand the difference in the salary structures of suppliers before selecting a supplier and formulating a negotiation strategy.

According to our research, the production manager at Honeywell International Inc. receives an 18% - 30% higher base salary compared to the salary received by the production manager working in companies such as Amcor plc., and DOW. However, the year-on-year increment rate in all these companies majorly depends on the Key Result Areas (KRAs).

Organizations may find it cumbersome to continuously track all the latest developments in their supplier landscape. Outsourcing the activities related to gathering intelligence allows organizations to focus on their core offerings. At this juncture, our newsletter service can help organizations stay updated with the latest developments and innovations and subsequently assist in preventing disruptions in the supply chain. We have identified the following developments within the blister packaging category over the last two years:

In June 2022, Henkel introduced plastic-free blister packs made from recycled paper. This will be made from 85% recycled paper and will contribute to the reduction of 1,000 tons of plastics annually.

In April 2022, Huhtamaki launched a Push Tab blister lid made of mono-material PET and free from aluminum. The product aims at improving the recyclability of the packaging and adhering to the safety requirements of the pharmaceutical industry.

In February 2022, CuePath Innovation Inc. launched generation 2 smart blister packaging solutions. This would provide medication monitoring and adherence support for products.

In August 2021, Klockner Pentaplast launched its new recyclable PET blister film, kpNext. It is the only PET recyclable blister that is completely compatible with pharmaceutical manufacturing form, fill, and seal equipment.
