In Italy, the medical use of marijuana was first approved in 2007. Presently, marijuana imported from Netherlands is only allowed to be sold in the country. In January 2013, the Health Minister signed a bill that allows medical use of marijuana for patients with a valid prescription from a licensed physician.
Patients are now allowed to obtain medical marijuana legally from licensed and state-run pharmacies. However, till date, the only marijuana available are those imported from the Netherlands. The cost of such medicines is high as compared to its price in the Netherlands.
In July 2015, 218 Italian lawmakers from various political parties signed a bill for legalizing the possession of medical marijuana up to 15 grams’ retail sales, and its cultivation in personal quantities. Thus, increasing use of marijuana and expected legalization of marijuana are likely to drive the Italy market during the forecast period.
