In Italy, the medical use of marijuana was first approved in 2007. Presently, cannabis imported from the Netherlands is only allowed to be sold in the country. In January 2013, the health minister signed a bill that allows medical use of cannabis for patients with a valid prescription from a licensed physician.
Patients are now allowed to obtain medical cannabis legally from licensed and state-run pharmacies. However, till date, the only cannabis available is imported from the Netherlands. The cost of such medicines is high as compared to its price in the Netherlands.
In July 2015, 218 Italian lawmakers from various political parties signed a bill for legalizing the possession of medical marijuana up to 15 grams through the retail sales, and its cultivation for personal use.
