The global gas detector equipments market is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. Increasing demand for plant safety coupled with personnel safety worldwide has led to an increase in demand for gas detector equipment. Compliance with the tough safety rules and environmental regulations is expected to be a key driving factor over the next six years for gas detector equipment market growth. Major industrial sectors such as oil & gas, petroleum, refining, and mining need to comply with safety and environmental regulations. Acceptable levels of occupational exposure of personnel to toxic gases defined by industry guidelines and governed by regulatory organizations such as Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and American Society of Heating Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) compels the industry to install gas detecting equipment. This can alert personnel when toxic gas levels are raised beyond permissible limits. In addition, increasing awareness among plant owners and employees about occupational hazards is expected to have a positive influence on market growth.

There is an increase in awareness among the industry that even a long term exposure to the low concentration of toxic gases can adversely affect workers health.  Furthermore, an increase in safety for the medical and household sectors can provide an opportunity for gas detector equipment market growth. The slowdown in the growth of sectors such as industrial, manufacturing, and construction can be anticipated to be a restraining factor for its market growth. The growth rate during recession and slowdown periods can be expected to be at reduced momentum as the safety of personnel and plant cannot be compromised at times of economic challenges. Companies cannot afford to cut down on operational and safety measures owing to workers injuries, productivity, and penalties paid for not following regulatory norms set by OSHA. A positive outlook on the growth of high-end manufacturing industries such as aerospace and automobiles and demand from emergency response systems are expected to further augment gas detector equipments market growth.

Gas detector is the equipment used mostly as a part of the safety system for detecting the presence and leak of various gases in a consigned area. This device is linked to a control system to automatically shut down the process and/or sound an alarm to operators at times of gas leak for vacating the area. It can be used to detect flammable, combustible, and toxic gases and also can be used to detect oxygen depletion. Various sensors are used in gas detectors such as ultrasonic sensors, infrared sensors, semiconductor sensors, and electrochemical gas sensors. Applications can be found in refineries, industrial plants, automobiles, wastewater treatment facilities, and household activities. They are classified according to an operating mechanism such as oxidation, semiconductors, infrared, and catalytic. They are packaged in two major forms namely portable devices and fixed gas detectors. Portable devices are battery-operated devices usually worn on a belt or harness to monitor the atmosphere around workers and transmit warnings using audible and visual signals. Fixed gas detectors are used for detecting one or more gas and are mounted in the process or plant area or household sector. A tripping system can be installed at times of emergency systems.

Major demand is expected from the U.S., driven by increasing demand for replacement and occupational safety regulations. Another major demand is expected from emerging markets of Asia Pacific. India and China are expected to show a rapid increase in demand owing to the increasing number of investments in the chemical, petrochemical, power, steel, and oil & gas sectors. A further demand in Asia-Pacific is expected from the adoption of international safety standards and practices in its growing industrial sectors. Key players in gas detector equipments market include Dräger AG & Co, Airtest Technologies Inc, Honeywell International Inc, Bacharach Inc, GE Measurement & Control Solutions, Honeywell Analytics, BW Technologies Ltd, Mine Safety Appliances Company, Industrial Scientific Corporation, Siemens AG, RAE Systems Inc, Sierra Monitor Corporation, Scott Health & Safety. Sensidyne LP, Tyco International, and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.
