This report presents insights regarding oil palm plantations, Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) production, Crude Palm Oil (CPO) production, and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified sourcing. The report analyzes 328 oil palm plantations and 117 palm oil producing entities across the globe, that are members of the RSPO.

Key insights gathered from the analysis of information on oil palm cultivation & CPO production include:

• Oil palm plantations accounted for 7.7% of the total 290.7 million hectares of area under cultivation for vegetable oils, but accounted for 39.4% of the total vegetable oils output

• The average palm oil yield ranges between 1.9 to 4.8 tons per hectare, considerably higher than other vegetable oils

• Smallholder plantations collectively held larger tracts of land than integrated players or large-scale plantations

• The average landbank size for plantation was 42,600 hectares

• Average output of FFB was 496,598 tons per plantation

• Top 93 plantations with integrated milling operations, collectively sourced over 104.72 million tons of FFB from independent smallholders, third-party

• Of the 328 plantations analyzed, 37.8% of the entities belonged to Indonesia, 27.74% belonged to Thailand, and nearly 18% belonged to South American countries (with Colombia leading the lot)

• In 2023, the total CPO output was estimated at 79,834 kilo tons 

• Indonesia and Malaysia supply over 82.9% of the global CPO production output in 2023

• Riau, Kalimantan Tengah, Kalimantan Barat, and Sumatera Utara were the leading production hubs in Indonesia. These four regions accounted for 61% of the total CPO produced in Indonesia in 2023

• Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang, Johor, and Perak accounted for 87% of the total CPO produced in Malaysia in 2023

• Thailand, Colombia and Nigeria followed Indonesia and Malaysia, with the three countries collectively producing 6.95 million tons of CPO in 2023

• Top 10 entities accounted for 22% of the global CPO output in 2023, indicating that the milling process is highly fragmented in nature
