The global wood preservatives market size is expected to reach USD 2.11 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 5.0% from 2024 to 2030, as per the new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Increasing consumption of products in North America and Europe is expected to drive the market over the next seven years owing to increasing wood-based construction in the region.
The product helps to prevent the degradation of wood due to wood-destroying insects, sapstain, decay, or molds. A few of the most commonly used product types include Creosote, Pentachlorophenol, Propiconazole, Triadimefon, Acid Copper Chromate (ACC), Isothiazolinones, Copper Azole, Copper Napthenate, and Polymeric Betaine among others.
Creosote is one of the traditionally used products and has been put into practice as a heavy-duty product type since 1948. It is manufactured by distillation of coal tar at high temperatures. The pesticides which use creosote as an active material is used as a wood preservative to protect it against mites, fungi, and termites. Currently, creosote is used for commercial purposes only and indoor use of creosote has been prohibited. The outdoor applications include railroad ties and utility poles.
A few of the products used for treatment of lumbar include Copper azole, Alkaline copper quatenary (ACQ), Polymeric betaine, and Copper naphthenate among others. ACQ is a water-based wood preservative that helps to prevent decay from insects and fungi. It also has relatively low risks, based on its components of quaternary ammonium compounds and copper oxide.
The product has a huge contribution to protection of timber during transportation and storage, making them valuable in global trade of wood and agriculture products. Opportunities exist in wood preservation technology, such as environment-friendly formulations, to meet the evolving regulations and consumer preferences. The market players are involved in different strategies like joint ventures to cater to sustainable market needs. For instance, in January 2022, a joint venture was established between LANXESS and Matrica to produce sustainable biocide preservatives from renewable raw materials.
