U.S. Home Cleaning Appliances Consumer Insights - Usage, Attitudes, And Brand Performance Report

Introduction:

The desire for convenience and modern technology is driving the growth of the home cleaning appliance industry in the U.S. To reduce time and increase cleaning effectiveness, more and more people are utilizing air purifiers, smart mops, and robotic vacuums. Appliances that can be operated by voice commands or smartphones are becoming increasingly popular as lives become increasingly busy. Standard home cleaning appliances and washing machines use less water and energy, and many include sophisticated sensors to maximize resource use. As customers place higher value on convenience and hygiene, there is also an increasing interest in multipurpose cleaning supplies, UV sanitizers, and steam cleaners. While more affordable options have improved significantly, premium brands continue to innovate with features like AI-powered navigation and self-emptying dust bins, making advanced cleaning technology accessible at a range of price points. Here are the market trends:

  • Growth of Robotic Vacuums: Robotic vacuums are growing in popularity because of their efficiency, convenience, and capacity to automate routine cleaning duties. These gadgets are perfect for busy homes because they can be set to clean at particular times. They can avoid obstructions, navigate past furniture, and even identify areas that need more thorough cleaning thanks to their smart sensors. Robotic vacuums are becoming more accessible to a wider range of consumers as technology advances and becomes slightly reasonably priced.

  • Cordless and Rechargeable Options: Customers are increasingly choosing cordless and rechargeable vacuum cleaners because of their portability and convenience of use.  These gadgets give users greater flexibility because they don't require a power cord, which lets them clean different rooms or even the interior of their cars without being constrained by where the sockets are located. Many cordless types are lightweight, making them perfect for rapid clean-ups and reducing strain during extended use. Customers value the ease, adaptability, and sustainability these appliances offer as a result, which is why they are becoming more and more common among modern homes.

  • Air purifiers: With increasing concerns around the quality of air, mainly due to increased pollution, HEPA filtration and air purification systems have become an important selling feature in vacuum cleaners and household cleaning equipment. These HEPA filters excel at capturing microscopic particles, including dust, pollen, pet dander, and certain bacteria and viruses, preventing them from recirculating into the air during cleaning. This technology offers particular benefits to individuals with respiratory conditions, allergies, or asthma. Beyond vacuum cleaners, HEPA filtration is increasingly integrated into other household devices like air conditioners and robotic vacuums, contributing to healthier and cleaner living environments.

Chapter 1: Usage and Attitude

Evidently, 68% of consumers are using home cleaning appliances at least once a week, and 29% consumers claim to use them once a day, as customers are placing an increasing amount of importance on convenient home cleaning & organization.

Consumers Using Home Cleaning Appliances Several Times A Week Or More

Home cleaning appliances are primarily used for cleaning and organizing living spaces. As daily life gets busier, more people are looking for ways to make household chores easier and more efficient. This has led to a growing shift toward portable and AI-driven cleaning appliances that offer convenience, smart features, and hands-free operation. From robot vacuums that map your home to cordless tools that reach every corner, consumers are increasingly drawn to solutions that save time and effort. These modern tools aren’t just about keeping homes clean-they are about simplifying routines and giving people back a bit of their day.

When it comes to reasons for using a home cleaning appliance, simplifying daily routines stands out as a key driver for both females and males. In today’s fast-paced world, people are looking for tools that can ease the burden of everyday chores and help them manage their time more efficiently. Whether it’s cutting down the hours spent on cleaning or eliminating the hassle of manual labor, these appliances bring a sense of ease and control to daily life. Additionally, accomplishing tasks more effectively serves as the second major motivation for both genders. Consumers are not just looking for convenience-they want results. The ability to clean more thoroughly, reach tricky spots, or maintain a consistently tidy home with minimal effort makes these appliances an essential part of modern life. Ultimately, it's about enhancing comfort and improving efficiency.

Consumers often worry about the high cost of home cleaning appliances, particularly those with advanced technology. These high prices can be a barrier for those on a budget, as they feel they are paying too much for features that may not be necessary for everyday cleaning routines. To address this, brands should offer clear value for money, transparent pricing, flexible options, and educate consumers on how specific features can benefit their lifestyle. This will help ease concerns and build trust in the market.

Reasons For Using Home Cleaning Appliances - By Gender

Buying Behavior

Before making a purchase, buyers should have some knowledge about the product's dependability and performance, just like they should with any electrical equipment. Since home cleaning appliances are durable devices whose main purpose is to provide automation and comfort in the home, this is the most important factor. Price and value for money are then taken into account, given the increasing number of price-conscious consumers. Due to their regular use and need for long-lasting products, consumers choose to buy home cleaning appliances during promotions or discounts once every five years. Millennials and Gen Z both prefer to purchase home cleaning appliances from neighborhood appliance stores. The second most frequent location for both is department stores with electronics departments.

Preferred Mode Of Purchase Home Cleaning Appliances

We can confidently state that home cleaning appliances belong to the more planned purchase category, as more than 6 out of 10 respondents said their purchase was planned, 38% of consumers said their purchase was always planned, and 28% said their purchase was either planned or spontaneous, depending on the various circumstances and offers. Only about 9 percent of people have ever made an impulsive purchase. Few consumers make hasty purchases because they have an urgent need to upgrade or replace old technology due to unexpected malfunction or breakdown of the equipment.

Planned Vs Spontaneous Purchase Home Cleaning Appliances

According to the survey, a significant number of respondents said that, like other home appliances, the need for upgrading or replacing old devices, price, and affordability are the two main considerations that significantly influence the purchase of a home cleaning appliance. Additionally, positive product reviews and ratings also make a contribution towards driving these purchase decisions. Despite the increasing demand, there are still certain obstacles to buying a product, like short product lifespans or frequent replacements, as well as a lack of reasonably priced solutions with the necessary characteristics. Moreover, as customers' knowledge of comfort levels rises, eight out of ten are moderately to extremely conscious of the brand of home cleaning appliance they use.

Brand Power Play (Brand Health and Performance)

Some of the popular home cleaning appliance brands in the U.S. include Dyson, Hoover, iRobot, Bissell, and Eureka. Although the home cleaning appliances industry is competitive, Dyson dominates the market with 71% market share (by awareness) with its cutting-edge technology and sleek design.

Purchase Funnel

Even though several well-known home cleaning appliance brands operate in the U.S., only a few can maintain a strong performance across the purchase funnel. One of these brands is Dyson, which stands out due to its consistent performance from awareness to purchase intent despite experiencing a significant drop from awareness to consideration. This can be attributed to its premium positioning, advanced suction technology, and bag-less design. It also caters to pet owners by making their appliances pet-friendly and introducing a blue light feature that helps in detecting microscopic dust, resulting in more efficient cleaning. It is worth noting that brands like Hoover and Bissell are also well-known to U.S. customers and remain strong contenders fighting for the second position throughout the funnel, whilst giving commendable competition to Dyson. Their long-standing presence and affordable products are a big contributor to their performance.

Lastly, we also have iRobot, which claims its position in the market by introducing a robot cleaner that fully automates home cleaning for consumers, with the help of AI. This revolutionized the cleaning industry and has been gaining traction since then, posing a threat to traditional home cleaning appliances.
