Thanks to a remarkable array of inventions and technology, the speaker and headphone business in the USA is currently flourishing. Wireless technology has fundamentally altered how Americans listen to music, with Bluetooth earphones like Apple AirPods and other products from other companies becoming everyday essentials for millions. Waterproof designs are becoming increasingly popular, especially among Millennials and Gen Z, who value durable products for outdoor activities such as sports, hiking, and travel. Headphone manufacturers are offering sweatproof, form-fitting models to consumers as the exercise culture becomes more popular. Features such as noise reduction, spatial audio, and AI-driven advancements, like head tracking, attract customers seeking immersive audio experiences for gaming, virtual reality, and entertainment. The seamless integration, such as dual connectivity for speakers and headphones, has created an atmosphere that appeals to customers in an era where everyone uses smartphones. Additionally, as streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music become more popular, consumers are seeking products that deliver clear, high-quality sound to enhance their listening experience. The demand for speakers and headphones is rising as technology advances, offering customers more options than ever before. Here are the market trends:

  • Wireless Headphones and Speakers: The demand for wireless headphones and speakers is continuously rising, driven by modern versions of bluetooth connections, which have eliminated headphone jacks in smartphones. Beyond music, smart speakers like Google and Echo function to control smart home devices with a voice assistant have also gained popularity.

  • Premium Sound Quality: Premium sound quality is becoming a top priority for many consumers, with an increasing number of audiophiles and casual listeners alike seeking high-fidelity audio experiences such as Dolby Atmos and lossless audio. Music streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify also offer lossless audio, providing an immersive audio experience.

  • Multi-Device Connectivity: Multi-device connectivity has become a key feature for modern headphones and speakers, as consumers seek seamless transitions between devices, also known as dual connection. A user is listening to music on his laptop when he gets a call on his phone. If he receives the call, due to the dual connection, his music will pause and resume only after he is done with the call, which is a great and innovative feature.

Chapter 1: Usage and Attitude

The use of speakers and headphones has seen significant growth and advancement, with more consumers using them to listen to music, podcasts, watch movies, and more. That said, 36% of consumers use speakers and headphones multiple times a day. About 20% of them use speakers and headphones once a day.

Consumers Using Speaker And Headphones Several Times A Week Or More

Speakers and headphones are primarily used for entertainment, with about 7 out of 10 consumers using them for activities such as watching movies or gaming. However, 25% of people are also incorporating them into their work and productivity routines, such as for virtual meetings or focused listening during tasks. This shift reflects the growing need for high-quality audio in both leisure and professional environments, as clear sound enhances communication and overall experience. Whether it is tuning into a podcast or collaborating on a video call, these devices are becoming more versatile in meeting diverse needs.

Occasions Of Usage Of Speaker And Headphones

When it comes to reasons for using speakers and headphones, entertainment and relaxation are key drivers for both females and males, providing an immersive experience for activities like gaming, watching movies, or listening to music. For females, increasing productivity or efficiency is the second most important reason, as headphones help focus while working or studying. Meanwhile, for males, enhancing communication is a top priority, especially for activities like gaming or professional calls, where clear sound and reliable audio are crucial for collaboration. These devices are valued for their versatility, improving both leisure and work-related tasks and offering comfort and performance across various settings.

A significant concern with speakers and headphones is the high price of premium models that come with the latest features, such as noise cancellation and superior sound quality. While these advanced technologies are appealing, they often come at a cost that does not fit everyone’s financial plan. Another drawback is the steep price tag for features that some consumers may never use, such as additional bass or multiple voice assistant functions. This leads to frustration, as buyers may feel they are paying for unnecessary features, especially when more affordable options exist. As a result, shoppers are increasingly looking for products that offer the best value without unnecessary extras. To meet this demand, manufacturers could focus on providing more reasonable pricing and customizable features to cater to a broader audience.

Reasons For Using Speakers And Headphones - By Gender

Buying Behavior

Before buying a speaker or a headphone, consumers consider the product's performance and dependability. Customers view product performance as one of the primary decision criteria when purchasing speakers and headphones, and companies that prioritize this area are likely to have a competitive advantage. The second is value for money and pricing, since customers are cost-conscious, and brands must serve these markets. The product's compatibility with other devices is the final crucial piece of information that buyers look for. Most people buy speakers and headphones every 5 years because they last a long time. The product's lifespan significantly affects how often people buy it.

When it comes to modes of purchase, online electronics e-commerce marketplaces are the most common; however, when deep-diving into Gen Z and Millennials, a brand's official website is a go-to for Gen Z, while online electronics e-commerce marketplaces are preferred by Millennials.

Preferred Mode Of Purchase Speakers And Headphones

Mostly planned purchases account for 65% of consumer behavior, indicating that a significant portion of buyers prefer to make thoughtful, well-planned decisions before buying. While only a small percentage of consumers buy speakers and headphones impulsively, many do so when the prices are lower or when they feel an immediate need to upgrade or replace their older devices. This shows that for most consumers, purchasing these audio devices is a deliberate decision driven by affordability and the desire for better, more up-to-date technology. The combination of attractive pricing and the natural product upgrade or replacement cycle makes it easier for buyers to invest.

Planned Vs Spontaneous Purchase Speakers And Headphones

Similar to a spontaneous purchase, the pricing of a product and having to upgrade also drive general purchases, especially a well-thought-out one. This is an important indication towards budget-savvy consumers unwilling to compromise on quality or burn a hole in their pocket for an advanced product. With pricing playing a significant role, a product’s short life span makes up for a pain point for consumers, leading to frequent replacements, thus costing more in the long run.

Factors Influencing The Purchase Decision Speakers And Headphones

Brand Power Play (Brand Health and Performance)

Some of the popular speaker and headphone brands in the U.S. include Sony, Bose, Apple (Beats by Dre), JBL (Harman), and Skullcandy. Although the speaker and headphone industry is competitive, Sony dominates the market with 78% share (by awareness) due to their wide range of products that cater to various price points and user preferences, from affordable everyday listening to premium, feature-packed models like 360 Reality Audio and noise-canceling.

Purchase Funnel

Although many speakers and headphone brands are well-known, only a few make it past the stage of being considered and preferred. Sony and Bose are the leaders that provide each other with tough competition throughout the funnel, despite experiencing a big drop from awareness to consideration. Having said that, while Sony enjoys slightly higher awareness, it drops significantly in consideration and recovers only slightly in preference and purchase intent, but still falls short by 2% compared to Bose.

However, what makes Sony a winner is that it recovers and stands at 1st position in terms of usage, making it a market leader. This can be attributed to the fact that not only does Sony provide an immersive sound experience and products packed with features, but it also caters to a wide range of price segments. This helps consumers choose a product based on their price preference without compromising too much on performance. What makes Bose a tough competitor is its sound quality and noise-cancelling ability, which are similar to what Sony offers or even better in some use cases. However, given that Bose’s products, even the entry-level models, are comparably expensive to Sony's, it ranks 2nd in usage. Thus, it is important for brands to offer performance and affordability together for their products to encourage better usage among consumers.
