The global PFAS-free coatings market is projected to reach USD 3.1 billion by 2033, at a CAGR of 6.3% over the forecast period, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Increasing regulatory attention toward per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances is acting as a major catalyst for the shift to fluorine-free surface-treatment technologies. Governments and regulatory authorities are progressively strengthening controls due to the persistence and environmental mobility of these chemicals, prompting manufacturers and downstream users to reconsider conventional coating formulations. Food packaging, textiles, electronics, automotive components, and industrial products are among the key application areas facing rising substitution requirements.
Designing customized coating systems that deliver the functionality required for individual applications rather than attempting to reproduce every property associated with fluorinated chemistry in one formulation. Silicone, sol-gel ceramic, bio-based polymer, plasma-deposited, and diamond-like carbon technologies are being developed for different performance requirements, allowing suppliers to differentiate through enhanced durability, repellency, low-friction characteristics, chemical resistance, and adhesion. Commercial opportunities are particularly promising where technological advancements can address existing performance limitations while integrating with established manufacturing processes. Hybrid formulations and advanced surface-engineering approaches can combine complementary characteristics, allowing suppliers to serve demanding applications across electronics, industrial equipment, textiles, packaging, and medical devices.
Silicone-based coatings accounted for 28.9% of revenue in 2025, maintaining their leading position due to proven performance in non-stick, release, water-repellent, and protective applications. Their ability to deliver key surface properties without fluorinated chemistry makes them well suited to ongoing substitution initiatives. These solutions are used across cookware, food-processing equipment, textiles, packaging, and industrial surfaces where specific surface characteristics are required. Ongoing formulation advancements are aimed at enhancing durability, adhesion, temperature tolerance, and compatibility with various substrates. Performance expectations differ by application, particularly in environments requiring high grease resistance or exposure to demanding operating conditions.
Food packaging represented the largest application segment, accounting for 18.4% of revenue in 2025. Growth is being supported by tightening restrictions on PFAS in food-contact materials, particularly grease- and oil-resistant paper and paperboard packaging. The U.S. FDA indicates that PFAS-based grease-proofing substances are no longer being sold for use in paper and paperboard food packaging in the U.S. Alternative solutions include cellulose-based, silicone, wax, polymeric, and other barrier technologies designed to provide moisture and grease resistance. The EU-funded ZeroF initiative has also developed fluorine-free packaging coatings based on cellulose fatty-acid esters. Increasing emphasis on recyclable packaging and chemical compliance is expected to further encourage adoption among converters and food brands.
Asia Pacific accounted for 32.6% of the market in 2025, supported by its extensive manufacturing base across electronics, textiles, automotive, packaging, and industrial products. Rising production volumes across these industries are creating a broad customer base for fluorine-free surface-treatment technologies. Regulatory developments in China, Japan, Australia, and other regional economies are also encouraging manufacturers to reassess fluorinated materials and qualify suitable alternatives.

The industry is experiencing transformation as regulatory oversight, corporate sustainability commitments, and evolving customer preferences accelerate the shift away from fluorinated coating technologies. PFAS restrictions are particularly affecting food packaging, textiles, industrial equipment, electronics, and other applications that have traditionally relied on fluorinated chemistry for repellency, non-stick performance, and chemical resistance.
Acrylic-based coatings are projected to be the fastest-growing product segment, having a 7.6% CAGR during the forecast period. Their expansion is supported by formulation versatility and the ability to customize adhesion, flexibility, weather resistance, and protective properties according to application requirements.
Automotive & transportation is projected to be the fastest-growing end-use segment, advancing at an 8.4% CAGR from 2026 to 2033. Growth is being supported by demand for protective, anti-friction, conformal, release, and corrosion-resistant treatments across various vehicle components. The transition toward electric and software-defined vehicles is creating additional requirements for specialized coatings used on electronic assemblies, displays, sensors, and other advanced components.
Latin America is projected to grow at a 6.2% CAGR during the forecast period, supported by gradual adoption of fluorine-free technologies across packaging, automotive, textiles, and industrial manufacturing. Brazil and Mexico are expected to represent key demand centers due to their relatively large manufacturing and consumer-goods industries.
In November 2025,Hydromer entered a commercial partnership with Avem Market Solutions to expand access to its medical coating technologies across Ireland, Europe, and the U.K. The arrangement provides medical-device developers with earlier access to validated coating options, feasibility support, scale-up assistance, and technical expertise, strengthening Hydromer’s regional commercialization capabilities.
