Driver: Preference for plastic over glass & metal

Increasing requirement for substitution of glass, metals, wood, natural rubber, and man-made materials, such as concrete, is driving the global blow molded plastic market. Different types of blow molded plastics are rapidly replacing most materials in automotive, construction & infrastructure, medical & healthcare, and consumer goods applications. Increasing stress on reducing carbon emissions is leading to the replacement of metals and heavy substances with lightweight plastics, mainly in automobiles and industrial machinery. Regulatory bodies across various nations have imposed numerous stringent regulations in order to reduce the impact of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases (GHG) on the environment and human health. Thus, the corresponding demand for fuel-efficient cars and industrial machinery created from plastic components has also increased. Weight reduction associated with plastic applications is contributing to the increasing substitution of glass and metal in packaging applications, thereby leading to overall reduction of carbon emissions. Numerous negative health repercussions have fostered the development of “green plastics” that are biodegradable and created from plant matter. This trend may also pave the path toward achieving sustainability in the future. Increasing demand for blow molded plastics in automotive applications is also expected to boost the global market over the forecast period. In 2009, the EU funded the Superlight-Car project, which was aimed at demonstrating approximately 30% weight reduction in compact passenger cars, thereby leading to reduced carbon emissions. Use of blow molded plastics is also witnessing an increase in pipes and fittings segments supported by their reduced cost, long life span, corrosion resistance, and light weight.

Restraint: Growth in bio-based polymer usage

Since plastic polymers are toxic to the environment, the use of bio-based polymers is increasing. Government regulations restricting the consumption of petrochemical-derived polymers in certain applications, such as food packaging and medical devices, are expected to further incentivize the production of bio-based polymers. Various regulations on carbon emissions from vehicles and recyclability & reusability of plastics are expected to further drive the bio-based polymers market. Polymers derived from bio-based sources such as polybutylene succinate (PBS), polylactic acid (PLA), and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) exhibit exceptional biodegradability as compared to petrochemical derivatives. These products are widely accepted in biomedical and agricultural applications. Currently, Coca-Cola’s Plant Bottle, a bio-PET product, is composed of 30% mono-ethylene glycol content and 70% purified terephthalic acid (PTA). Thermos plastic olefins (TPO), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and nylon, among others, are the raw materials used in the blow molding process. Blow molding plastics are used in the automotive industry in the interior and exterior applications such as panelling & railing, fender, bumper support, mudguard, and door locking system of a vehicle. Interior application of blow molded plastics includes garnish pillars, storage systems, console lids, shifter knobs, steering wheels, cooling systems, resonators, and interior & exterior trims. Blow molded plastics are used in the manufacturing of jigs and fixtures for their use in industrial purposes. Packaging application of blow molding includes jerry cans and drums with a narrow or wide mouth.
