Cross Laminated Timber Market Dynamics
Driver: Increased product demand in building & construction applications
Cross laminated timber (CLT) is increasingly used in construction applications owing to the rising awareness of its benefits including design flexibility, fire resistance, superior thermal performance, and cost-effectiveness. Traditionally, materials like steel and concrete have been employed for building and construction applications. However, the added benefits of CLT over steel and concrete materials including clean & noiseless construction process, reduced construction time, and low cost have increased its demand. The infrastructure projects are expected to rise progressively in the coming years. This subsector is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.0% from 2020 to 2030, followed by construction, housing, and non-housing subsectors that are expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6%, 3.5%, and 3.2%, respectively during the same period. The non-housing sector has been the most severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and is expected to recover at the slowest rate in the coming years. Non-housing subsector will grow by an average of nearly 1.5% points less per year than the infrastructure subsector between 2020 and 2025, owing to the rise in commercial building construction.
Driver: Reduction in carbon emissions using cross laminated timber
The construction industry is the major contributor to CO2 emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions have significantly increased in recent years. The building sector is responsible for around 40% of the total energy consumption and carbon emissions across many developed economies. Therefore, the expansion of the construction industry across the globe is anticipated to result in growing environmental issues. However, unlike concrete, cross laminated timber offers several environmental benefits. It outperforms both steel and concrete in terms of energy, water, and air pollution. Carbon storage is an important component of building with CLT. CLT products are also characterized by superior performance in terms of the generation of job site waste. Since most of the CLT panels are pre-fabricated, there is minimal waste generation on the site. In addition, manufacturers re-use scrap for the fabrication of stairs or other prefabricated components. The proven strength, cost competitiveness, and structural performance provided by CLT are expected to increase opportunities for the product to expand applications in the construction of industrial buildings, recreational centers, multi-family homes, and educational institutes.
Restraint: Potential problems related to CLT construction
CLT structures fail to achieve the level of sound insulation that is offered by concrete or other masonry owing to lesser density. In addition, timber constructions are exposed to condensation occurring on the surface or interstitial condensation occurring between the layers of the building envelope. This condensation occurs owing to the dispersion of air passing from the warm interior of the building to the cool façade and precipitating within the building fabric. Timber structures are at risk when exposed to higher temperatures as compared to steel and masonry frames. In addition, there is an increased risk of fire if timber structures are installed incorrectly. Furthermore, external timber structures tend to rot if not maintained properly. If the structure is not well protected and heated and if the moisture content in the structure exceeds 20%, there is a high risk of infestation. Many of the species that cause most of the damage are expected to only attack newly felled timber or hardwood.
