Drivers: Shifting trend toward cleaner energy

The global energy crisis has nurtured research and exploration in substitute sources of energy generation, plus numerous ecological conservation initiatives. Sustainability in energy generation is an enormous field and involves several steps, which are needed to be employed in the primary stages, since their potential environmental and commercial influences can be significant.Growing investments in smart “energy-saving” residential and commercial buildings are expected to provide an impetus toward the adoption of hydrogen for energy generation. Hydrogen is a financially viable option to investors as they also comply with federal and environmental regulations, catering to the everincreasing demand for energy. Setting up a hydrogen generation unit is a promising albeit expensive business proposition, considering the additional expenses that need to be incurred. Grid connectivity equips installers to sell extra energy units to others through the grid among other economic benefits offered by the government. Many countries across the globe have set targets to reduce their carbon emissions and have started to invest in renewable energy to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. For instance, in November 2021, the government of Germany set a new target of reducing the country’s net carbon emissions to zero by 2045.

Drivers: Favorable government regulations

In the past two decades, research on clean fuels, with desulfurization of petroleum products has increased pace giving a push to researches on environmental catalysis across the globe. US EPA norms presently governing production and distribution of diesel fuels and gasoline have observed a noticeable surge in the air emission levels when compared to the statistics offered over the past twenty years. With the introduction of new US EPA Tier II regulations to control the content of sulfur in gasoline from its current maximum level of 350-30 ppm, that is the refinery average, and 80 ppm as per-gallon by 2006, and to further reduce the highway diesel fuel sulfur content from currently being 500 ppmw down to 15 ppmw (per-gallon average) by 2006, petroleum refineries are faced with significant restraints to fulfill the sulfur content levels coupled with the mandatory reduction of aromatic contents. Recently, the EPA announced a plan to control sulfur levels in off road diesel fuel from current average of 3400 ppm down to 500 ppm by 2007 and further to 15 ppm by 2010. The US Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and related new fuel regulations by the US EPA and government regulations in many countries call for the production and use of more environmentally friendly transportation fuels with lower contents of sulfur and aromatics.

Restraint: Sluggish development of distribution channels in developing countries

Renewable sources of energy are the future, given the exhaustible nature of conventional fossil fuels. Most of the developed nations of the world are considering investing heavily in hydrogen as a key fuel. However, the crucial economic indicators for the large-scale adoption of any fuel is the safety and costs associated with the distribution of hydrogen to its end user. Every fuel is faced with the same issue, however, in case of hydrogen, the challenges are compounded, given its high diffusivity, coupled with its low density and highly volatile and inflammable nature that are attributes usually associated with alcohols with low molecular weights or hydrocarbons. For industrial use, Hydrogen is distributed in two ways, namely - Captive distribution and Merchant distribution. Captive distribution is when a company has a wholly owned source of hydrogen, solely for their use. Companies requiring large volumes of hydrogen daily, opt for Captive hydrogen generation sources. On the other hand, merchant distribution has hydrogen dealers distributing the gas through cylinders to companies with a requirement, albeit not very regularly.
