Pipe Insulation Market Dynamics

Driver: Growth of chemical processing industry in the Asia Pacific region

The growth of the global chemical processing industry is expected to significantly impact the demand for pipe insulation materials. Industrial pipe or process piping is generally used to transport water, steam, and industrial gases at varying temperatures around an industrial facility. The term industrial pipes is inclusive of various types of plumbing systems that carry liquids and gases used for heating and cooling purposes. Industrial pipes can withstand highly aggressive environments. These pipes are generally made of steel, cast iron, copper, or specialty metals such as brass. Insulation of these piping systems helps reduce heat loss and conserve the energy required for heating and cooling of the processed liquids. Over the past few years, the improving economy of emerging markets including China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia has been forcing respective governments to frame supportive policies to promote investments in the extraction of natural resources such as crude oil and natural gas. In addition, increasing technological adoption in exploration and production activities has played a crucial role in enhancing the production of crude oil and natural gas. As a result, Asia Pacific is expected to remain home to one of the fastest-growing petrochemical processing industries in the world.

Driver: Rising awareness regarding energy conservation

Insulation system provides long-term, as well as immediate benefits to the industry, including protection of equipment, personnel, system, and budget. In addition, insulation is responsible for enhancing the efficiency of machinery and process performance in the system, which results in the reduction of manufacturing and energy costs. Energy expenditure accounts for a significant part of the overall production cost in the chemical industry. A significant amount of energy is consumed on cooling and heating of base, intermediate, and final products. The shell and tube heat exchangers are widely used across the chemical industry to cool highly viscous products such as latex; heating, cooling, and reheating solvents such as toluene; and heating and cooling of different solutions, acids, and bases such as sodium hydroxide. The acoustic performance of insulation in large-scale factories helps curb high-frequency noises made by machines on the job floor. Furthermore, it protects all industrial appliances from fire, prevents the condensation of moisture on the equipment, and protects the equipment at extremely low or high temperatures leading to reduced accidental risks.

Restraint: Growing environmental concerns related to the use of blowing agents

Blowing agents employed in the insulation industry contain ozone-depleting substances and are of serious concern to the environment. These blowing agents that are employed in various insulation materials, such as PU foams, phenolic foam, EPS, and XPS, contain hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), carbon dioxide, and pentane, which are considered major greenhouse gases. The U.S. EPA has implemented stringent regulations regarding the usage of CFCs, HFCs, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform in insulation products. The EPA has banned the use of asbestos in insulation under The Toxic Substances Control Act and Clean Air Act, which includes both asbestos pipe insulation and asbestos block insulation. Additionally, the authority imposed heavy regulations on spray polyurethane foams (SPF) in insulation owing to health issues associated with its ingredients that include isocyanates such as methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI).
