The rosemary extract market has experienced significant growth in recent years due to its versatile applications across various industries. Rosemary extract, derived from the leaves of the rosemary plant (Rosmarinus officinalis), is known for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, making it a popular ingredient in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic sectors.

In the food & beverages industry, rosemary extract is utilized as a natural preservative and flavor enhancer. With increasing consumer demand for clean labels and natural ingredients, food manufacturers are incorporating rosemary extract into their products as a safer alternative to synthetic additives such as propyl gallate (PG), tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), and others. In addition, rosemary extract's antioxidant properties help extend the shelf life of food products, reducing food waste and ensuring product freshness. This has led to a surge in the demand for rosemary extract in the food industry.

In 2019, Iranian Journal of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering conducted a study to determine how well an edible coating made of alginate and the essential oils of rosemary and cinnamon would preserve the chemical and sensory properties of chicken flesh when kept refrigerated. Results showed that all treatments significantly differed from control during storage in terms of chemical parameters and sensory characteristics. As a result, fresh chicken meat's shelf life was increased during refrigeration, and the functional alginate-sodium coating containing cinnamon essential oil (CEO) and rosemary essential oil (REO) have significant food preservation potential.

The personal care & cosmetic industry has embraced rosemary extract for its skin and hair care properties. Rosemary extract is rich in antioxidants that help combat free radicals, reducing the signs of aging and promoting healthier skin. It is also known for its antimicrobial properties, making it an ideal ingredient for natural skincare products targeting acne-prone skin. Moreover, rosemary extract's stimulating effect on blood circulation has made it a popular addition to hair care products, promoting hair growth and scalp health. As the demand for organic and sustainable cosmetic products continues to rise, the rosemary extract market is expected to witness further expansion.

In November 2021, Givaudan launched a natural antioxidant solution (N.A.S) rosemary 01, a cosmetic ingredient that competes with butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) by outperforming its effectiveness in an organic and natural manner. The ingredient was created through green fractionation using rosemary that was sustainably sourced, primarily from Morocco, offers antioxidant advantages superior to those of BHT and BHA and some natural remedies, while also preserving plant oils and stabilizing colors.

The pharmaceutical sector has also witnessed a rise in the use of rosemary extract due to its potential health benefits. Rosemary extract contains bioactive compounds such as rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid, which have been associated with anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. As research continues to uncover the therapeutic potential of these compounds, pharmaceutical companies are exploring the incorporation of rosemary extract in various medications and dietary supplements. This expanding application of rosemary extract in the pharmaceutical sector has contributed to its market growth.

Based on source, the market is segmented into organic and conventional. Organic rosemary extract is derived from organically grown rosemary plants, which are cultivated without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The growing consumer awareness and demand for organic products, driven by concerns about environmental sustainability and personal health, have propelled the growth of the organic segment. For instance, as per the article published by The Business of Fashion on March 2021, L’Oréal stated that over the coming 10 years 95% of its ingredients across the cosmetics brands derive from flowers and plants are renewable.
