"Industry: Medical Devices"
The knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure to replace the damaged knee or knee part with artificial components (implant) to relieve disability and pain. It is usually performed in patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and other knee diseases. The selection of implant is depend on patient need and considering some other factors such as knee condition and knee anatomy, weight, age, and activity level.
"Implant components and procedure types"
Total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and revision knee replacement are three main types of surgeries suggested by doctors based on the condition of patient.
There are two types of component used in knee implants: Fixed-bearing implants and mobile-bearing implants. The fixed-bearing implant involves attachment of polyethylene of the tibial component tightly to the metal implant beneath. The mobile-bearing implant allows additional degrees of rotation to the lateral and medial sides of their knee.
"Implant designs"
Implants are made of ceramic material, metal alloys, or strong plastic. In knee replacement procedure up to three bone surfaces (lower end of the femur, top surface of the tibia, back surface of the patella) may be replaced by surgeons depend on patient’s knee condition. There are different implant designs are available including posterior-stabilized designs, bicruciate-retaining designs, cruciate-retaining designs, and unicompartmental designs.
In posterior-stabilized design, the cruciate ligaments are eliminated and parts of the implant replacement for the posterior cruciate ligament. In posterior-stabilized implant, the posterior cruciate ligament is retaining with this implant design. Bicruciate-retaining designs are comparatively new to the industry and both the posterior and anterior cruciate ligaments are available in it. The Unicompartmental implants are designed for a partial knee replacement procedure.
"When is knee implant surgery recommended?"
There are many treatment options available for knee treatment such as exercise, physical therapy, medication or cortisone shots, acupuncture, prolotherapy, and implant surgery. The implant procedure is suggested by doctors taking into account a number of indications:
• Severe knee pain
• Continuous knee pain
• Chronic knee swelling and inflammation
• Knee deformity
• Failure of medications and other treatments to obtain pain relief
"Key players"
As knee implant market is growing significantly, several companies have begun focusing on strategic collaborations; acquisitions, and partnership agreements to sustain in the industry and gaining higher market share. For instance, in June 2015, Zimmer completed the acquisition of Biomet, which led to strengthening its knee implant product segment. Currently, there are many big and medium scale vendors present in the industry. The key players are Zimmer Biomet, Stryker, Smith and Nephew, DePuy Synthes, Exactech, Aesculap Implant Systems, Medacta, MicroPort Scientific, CONMED, Kinamed, ConforMIS, and OMNI life science
