Organic Chemicals – Pricing Trends, July 2026
Organic chemicals recorded mixed but predominantly firmer movement during July 2026. Aromatics led the market as benzene, toluene, and styrene strengthened following renewed geopolitical tension, higher crude-linked costs, and restricted regional cargo availability. Chinese benzene stocks fell to exceptionally low levels as imports contracted and several domestic units underwent maintenance. The tighter benzene balance extended support to styrene, aniline, caprolactam, phenol, and selected resin intermediates, although weak margins restricted operating rates across some downstream plants.
Alcohol and solvents displayed more selective movement. IPA and N-butanol recovered from earlier weakness, while methanol fluctuated as buyers assessed imported supply, domestic availability, and downstream demand. Acetic acid remained supported by measured purchasing, while movement across glycols, plasticizers, ketones, and esters differed according to plant availability and immediate requirements from coatings, textiles, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and construction-related applications. India’s temporary customs-duty relief and supply-management measures helped reduce the risk of shortages across critical petrochemical feedstocks.
Inorganic Chemicals – Pricing Trends, July 2026
Inorganic chemical markets remained comparatively subdued during July 2026. Caustic soda and soda ash were affected by adequate availability and cautious downstream procurement. Demand from alumina, glass, pulp and paper, detergents, textiles, and water treatment provided underlying support but was insufficient to produce a broad improvement. Chinese official price indications showed early weakness in liquid caustic soda followed by some stabilization during the middle of the month.
Mineral acids and sulphur-related products recorded product-specific movement. Sulphuric acid remained sensitive to sulphur availability, fertilizer production, mining, and metal-processing requirements, while nitric acid conditions remained comparatively balanced. Bromine moved on firmer sentiment in China after earlier weakness, whereas carbon black reflected the balance between crude-derived feedstock costs and cautious tire and rubber demand. Fluorite, hydrofluoric acid, aluminum fluoride, inorganic salts, and industrial fillers generally recorded narrower movement than the major organic chemical chains.

Chemicals Key Market Drivers
-
Middle East disruption and feedstock uncertainty - Middle East developments remained an important influence on chemical markets during July. Renewed conflict affected crude oil, naphtha, natural gas, sulphur, and petrochemical trade through the Strait of Hormuz and other regional shipping routes. Higher freight and insurance costs, reduced cargo visibility, and uncertainty over delivery schedules encouraged precautionary purchasing across selected markets. The effect was particularly visible in aromatics, plastics, polymers, methanol, IPA, and sulphur-linked products. However, the impact varied according to regional import dependence and domestic production availability. Markets with sufficient local supply remained comparatively stable, while those relying on Middle Eastern feedstocks or intermediate chemicals experienced greater price and availability pressure.
-
Tight Chinese benzene supply and refinery maintenance - Chinese benzene availability tightened significantly during July as lower imports and domestic plant maintenance reduced supply. Commercial inventories at Jiangsu ports fell to record-low levels within the surveyed series after several consecutive weeks of destocking. Refinery benzene operating rates also declined as scheduled and extended maintenance affected production. At the same time, the restart of selected styrene units increased immediate benzene requirements. These conditions supported benzene and strengthened sentiment across styrene, aniline, phenol, caprolactam, and related intermediates. Downstream margins nevertheless remained under pressure, preventing the feedstock rally from spreading equally across all finished chemical products.
-
Supply-management measures in India - India’s chemical and pharmaceutical sectors remained exposed to interruptions in imported feedstocks during July. The government identified temporary shortages and higher costs for IPA, ammonia, and methanol arising from the West Asian conflict. Measures included allocating additional propylene to improve IPA and propylene glycol availability, facilitating surplus ammonia supplies, and coordinating with traders and domestic producers to secure methanol. Full customs-duty relief on selected critical petrochemical imports was also extended until 15 July, while quality-control requirements for selected products were suspended to broaden sourcing options. These actions helped support continuity for pharmaceuticals, plastics, packaging, textiles, automotive components, and wider manufacturing.

Weak downstream demand and high operating costs - Chemical producers continued facing uneven demand from construction, automobiles, coatings, textiles, packaging, appliances, and other manufacturing sectors. This limited producers’ ability to pass every increase in feedstock and logistics costs to customers. Conditions remained particularly challenging in Europe, where chemical production continued to operate below historical levels and organic basic chemicals and polymers recorded notable weakness. Germany reported lower production and investment, while UK chemical companies continued highlighting high energy costs and delayed capital expenditure. As a result, July’s market improvement remained concentrated on physically tight products rather than developing into a broad demand-leading recovery.
-
Regional investment and supply-chain localization - Chemical-producing countries continued investing in domestic value chains to reduce import dependence and improve supply resilience. The UAE advanced cooperation covering sulphur logistics, methanol, and wider chemicals investment, while TA’ZIZ continued developing integrated production in methanol, caustic soda, and vinyl-chain chemicals. Saudi Arabia maintained chemical-clearance services to support industrial users and continued expanding advanced-material and downstream petrochemical partnerships. Egypt progressed plans for an integrated phosphate-industries complex at Ain Sokhna, while Morocco remained focused on its sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, and phosphate-processing chain. These developments will influence regional trade patterns as new production and logistics infrastructure become operational.

China - China’s chemical market displayed mixed but generally firmer movement across organic chemicals during July. Benzene and styrene received support from low port inventories, domestic refinery maintenance, restricted import availability, and higher crude-linked sentiment. Methanol and acetic acid also strengthened during parts of the month, while sulphuric acid, caustic soda, and several inorganic chemicals followed more balanced conditions. Downstream buyers remained cautious because higher feedstock costs continued to pressure margins across plastics, resins, fibers, and other manufacturing chains.
India - India focused on maintaining the availability of critical chemical and petrochemical inputs affected by West Asian supply disruption. Temporary customs-duty relief remained in place until mid-July, while the government coordinated additional supplies of propylene, ammonia, and methanol. These measures supported pharmaceuticals, textiles, plastics, packaging, automotive components, and other manufacturing sectors, although buyers remained sensitive to freight, currency movement, and imported replacement costs.
Europe - European chemical markets remain under pressure from weak demand, high energy costs, and growing international competition. EU chemical production continued to remain below earlier benchmarks, with organic basic chemicals and polymers among the weaker segments. Middle Eastern supply disruption temporarily tightened selected imports, but the improvement was not sufficient to produce a sustained recovery in regional operating rates or downstream consumption.
France - France’s chemical sector remained more resilient than some other major European markets, but energy affordability continued to influence production competitiveness. During July, France Chimie highlighted financial support for energy-intensive chemical sites and changes to electricity-tax treatment. Demand remained connected to pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food processing, automotive production, aerospace, and construction, while producers continued managing high energy and decarbonization costs.
Germany - Germany’s chemical and pharmaceutical industry remained in a prolonged downturn. First-half production stayed below the previous year, while sales and investment also weakened. High costs, stagnant European demand, and the shift of chemical production and consumption toward Asia continued to affect operating rates and exports. Producers remained focused on restructuring, cost control, and maintaining competitiveness across automotive, machinery, coatings, plastics, and industrial applications.
UK - The UK chemical market continued to face high energy costs, trade pressure, and weak investment. The Chemical Industries Association reported that many companies had delayed, reduced, or canceled planned investment despite some indications of improving demand. Chemical producers remained cautious about increasing output because margins continued to be affected by energy, raw material, regulatory, and import-related costs.

Access Grand View Signal.U.S. - U.S. chemical markets were influenced by higher feedstock and energy costs, soft demand in selected end markets, and disruption to global petrochemical trade. Dow reported stronger pricing across packaging and specialty plastics as restricted Middle Eastern flows tightened global chemical and polymer availability. However, continued uncertainty around supply routes, construction, automotive demand, and industrial activity kept production and investment decisions cautious.
Saudi Arabia - Saudi Arabia’s chemical industry remained affected by regional logistics disruption. SABIC reported that lower sales volumes outweighed higher selling prices as the conflict disrupted shipping and supply chains. The company increased domestic shipments and used alternative logistics routes to maintain product movement. Saudi authorities also continued processing chemical-clearance applications to facilitate the entry of industrial raw materials through the Kingdom’s ports.
UAE - The UAE continued developing its position as a regional production, trading, and logistics Centre for chemicals. ADNOC, XRG, and Mitsui expanded cooperation across sulphur procurement, shipping, methanol, and other chemical opportunities. TA’ZIZ’s integrated chemicals ecosystem remained focused on domestic production of methanol, caustic soda, and vinyl-chain products, supporting industrial diversification and lower import dependence.
Egypt - Egypt continued advancing plans to create greater value from domestic phosphate resources. The government progressed discussions for an integrated phosphate-industries complex at Ain Sokhna in partnership with Elsewedy Electric. The development forms part of Egypt’s effort to move from exporting raw minerals toward producing higher-value chemical and mineral products for domestic and export markets.
Morocco - Morocco’s chemical sector remained closely linked to its integrated phosphate, sulphuric acid, and phosphoric acid value chain. The country remained exposed to Gulf sulphur supply because imported sulphur is required to convert phosphate rock into phosphoric acid and fertilizer products. Shipping disruption and higher sulphur procurement risk therefore remained important considerations for OCP and related industries, while continued investment in integrated processing supported long-term production growth.
Analyst Commentary
“Chemical markets displayed mixed movement during July 2026, with stronger conditions concentrated in aromatics and selected organic intermediates. Chinese benzene availability tightened as port inventories declined, imports remained restricted, and refinery maintenance reduced domestic production. This supported styrene and related downstream chains, although weak margins and cautious industrial purchasing prevented a broader recovery. Europe continued to face high energy costs and weak orders, while the Middle East remained important both as a source of supply disruption and as a center of new chemical investment. Near-term market direction will remain sensitive to crude and naphtha costs, Chinese inventories, plant restarts, shipping routes, downstream margins, and the pace of industrial demand recovery.”
