An automatic weapon is a type of firearm that mechanically loads every round once the first round has been fired. It can be classified into two categories, namely semi-automatic and fully automatic. Semi-automatic weapons fire one shot on the pull of a single trigger. However, fully automatic weapons load the weapon and fire shots until the trigger is released. Some of the popular automatic weapons used for air defense are the ZPU-2 14.5-mm anti-aircraft gun system, ZSU-57-2 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun system, and others, and naval defense, Mk 38 Mod 3 Machine Gun System (MGS), Bofors 40 Mk4 naval gun, SIMBAD-RC launcher, and others; land defense, AGS-17 an automatic grenade launcher, AR-15 rifle, and others.
The automatic weapons market is expected to grow due to the tension among many countries regarding geographical boundaries. For instance, the U.S. provided Ukraine with military suits, including automated weapons worth USD 3 billion. The military suits were to aid Ukraine in winning the war against Russia. In August 2022, Israel used numerous automatic weapons, including the Iron Dome, during the Gaza Strip conflict. Furthermore, in Hebron, a Palestinian city, the Israeli armed force installed automatic weapons such as SMASH HOPPER and SMASH HOPPER P.
Many countries are contracting with manufacturers of advanced automatic weapons to improve the attack and defense military equipment base. For instance, the U.S. Army announced its contract with SIG SAUER, a weapon manufacturer, to gain access to its newly developed soldier weapons, namely the XM5 rifle and the XM250 automatic rifle. Additionally, in May 2022, Belgian Customs signed a contract with Heckler & Koch for its semi-automatic handgun, SFP9 TR, the delivery of which is due in September 2023.
North America is one of the most technically advanced regions. It has headquartered many weapon manufacturers like BARRETT, Bushmaster Firearms International, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and more. These companies have massive contracts with various countries to supply ammunition. Additionally, civilians in North America are free to own a gun for their safety. These factors contribute to the growth of North America's automatic weapon market, making it one of the dominant regions.
