Driver: Advancements in GaN (gallium nitride) Technology

There have been major technological advancements in GaN semiconductors over the last 5 years. GaN semiconductors have demonstrated significant improvement in diode performance and their manufacturing costs have notably reduced. An increasing number of players in the market are focusing on the development of advanced GaN technology. The trend is expected to propel market growth over the forecast period. In 2019, BAE Systems, successfully completed the transition to Phase 1 short-gate gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology which was developed by the U.S. Air Force. This technology is suitable for the development of semiconductors used in applications such as radar, satellite communication, and software-defined radio that require wider frequency bandwidth. Research organizations are awarding contracts to various companies for encouraging developments in the production process of GaN-based semiconductors. GaN FETs can deliver a performance that is 10 times better than that of a traditional silicon MOSFET. Over the forecast period, this performance is expected to increase by more than 100 times as compared to silicon semiconductors, thanks to positive developments on the front of integrating multiple GaN semiconductor chips into a single chip. The use of GaN semiconductors for wireless charging technology is expected to drive the market growth.

Driver: Demand for RF GAN semiconductors in wireless communication applications

The increasing use of satellite communication for providing location-based services and wired broadband is expected to increase the adoption of RF GaN semiconductors. Across wireless applications, GaN technology is increasingly being adopted for power amplifiers, particularly switch-mode and wideband power amplifiers. GaN technology is being increasingly implemented for the development of amplifiers widely used in wireless communication, including Class E, Class F, and Class C power amplifiers. Restraint: High cost of bulk Gallium Nitride (GaN)

Currently, the price of bulk GaN is extremely high, costing nearly USD 1,900 or more for a two-inch substrate. This cost is significantly higher compared to silicon substrate, a six-inch substrate of which costs between USD 25 to USD 50. The high cost of bulk GaN can be attributed to GaN’s costly manufacturing process. A major barrier preventing the adoption of gallium nitride on silicon carbide (GaN-on-SiC) from applications such as wireless telecom base-stations or cable TV is due to the higher cost of GaN-on-SiC technology. Furthermore, the higher cost of GaN-on-SiC as compared to Sic-on-Sic is further expected to negatively impact market growth. In addition, the defectivity for GaN-on-SiC is also much higher than SiC-on-SiC, which could negatively impact market growth. Moreover, the advent of new materials such as Aluminum Nitride (AIN), which are considered to be more effective alternatives to manufacturing bulk GaN, could hamper the growth of the market.
