Microneedling, as stated by the American Academy of Dermatological Association, is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the superficial micro puncturing of the epidermis using a dermapen or a roller that is embedded with thin, miniature metal or silicon needles. The main aim of the technique is to induce peripheral trauma on the skin to trigger the skin’s repair mechanisms and boost underlying collagen production.

Dermatologists use sterile needles that deeply puncture the skin to treat varied skin conditions like wrinkles, scars, and cellulite. As stated by the NCBI, microneedling is a relatively new minimally invasive procedure that has gained tremendous popularity in a very short period of time due to its effectiveness, successful client testimonials, and low costs as compared to other skin rejuvenation treatments. The average in-office cost of microneedling treatment is around USD 425, which is quite low as compared to laser rejuvenation which ranges from around USD 700 to USD 1,200.
A study carried out by NCBI in 2018, to examine the safety and effectiveness of automated microneedling devices, reported that microneedling treatments of the face, significantly improve wrinkles, lines, and skin laxity & texture, after 90 and 150 days of the first treatment with minimal pain, discomfort, and downtime. Controlled micro-punctures are created leading to minimal superficial bleeding that sets up a wound healing cascade with the release of various growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factors.
According to Medical News Today, microneedling also assists in greater absorption of topical skincare products by the cells that include vitamins, retinoids, etc., which further assists in effective facial rejuvenation. It is also an efficient technique to reduce wrinkle appearance and get firm skin, as it induces collagen. Rising cases of skin disorders like skin damage and pigmentation are expected to boost the market growth. According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, sun damage is a top condition treated within the laser/light/energy-based devices, which increased by 14% year-over-year and up 22% from 2017 to 2020.
The COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected the overall aesthetics market in the first and second quarters of 2020. Many dermatology clinics and services were halted due to their elective nature and severely affected the operations of many aesthetic clinics due to the reduced patient footfall. However, many dermatologists believe that COVID-19 may act as a springboard that will drastically increase patient footfall post-pandemic. For instance, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the pandemic led to an increase in the acceptance of cosmetic procedures. The association’s survey of more than 1,000 women reported that 11% of the women are now more inclined and interested in nonsurgical procedures than before COVID-19.
Type Insights
The RF type segment accounted for the highest revenue share of 59% in 2020 and is estimated to retain the leading position growing at the fastest CAGR over the forecast period. The amalgamation of microneedling with radiofrequency has expanded the application of the procedure with respect to treating not only the face but also other parts of the body like the neck and chest. In RF microneedling, insulated needles are used to penetrate the skin and release radiofrequency currents into the epidermis without causing any blood loss or post-procedural scars.
RF microneedling does not damage the epidermis and also provides promising results thus, it is being readily adopted. On the basis of type, the market has been segmented into laser and RF microneedling. The laser microneedling treatments have been only currently launched. It is a combination procedure of laser treatment with microneedling. According to NCBI, a post-burn scar that was treated with a combination of microneedling and laser showed significant improvement.
Product Insights
Based on product, the market is segmented into derma-stamp, dermapen, and dermarollers. The dermapen segment accounted for the largest revenue share of more than 38% in 2020 and is expected to dominate the global market even during the forecast period. Dermapen devices are majorly used in dermatology clinics and according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association in-office microneedling treatment using dermapen equipped with RF offers more prominent results.
The use of products like dermaroller has also been readily adopted recently as they are easily available online and can be used at home with a combination of topical skin serums. The at-home microneedling devices are smaller than in-office microneedling devices (0.2 to 0.3 mm) and therefore offer less significant results. However, it is the most cost-effective device that costs under USD 60, and therefore it is being widely adopted by consumers.
Application Insights
The skin rejuvenation application segment accounted for the highest revenue share of more than 30% in 2020. The segment is also estimated to register the fastest CAGR from 2021 to 2028. Skin rejuvenation procedures are among the most frequently carried out minimally aesthetic procedures globally. On the basis of application, the market is divided into skin rejuvenation, acne scar, traumatic & surgical scars, and others.
According to ISAPS, around 276,069 facial rejuvenation procedures were carried out in the U.S., accounting for 26.2% of the total non-surgical market in the country. Moreover, factors like consciousness about appearance, the increasing geriatric population, rising cases of skin disorders, and high awareness regarding the effectiveness of aesthetic procedures are expected to boost the growth of this segment over the coming years.
Needle Material Insights
The metal segment accounted for the largest revenue share of more than 42% and is also expected to be the fastest-growing material segment over the forecast period. This growth can be credited to the fact that metals are strong enough to avoid breaking, thus more suitable as compared to silicon for microneedle devices.

In addition, they have good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, which is expected to drive the segment growth during the forecast period. The majority of the microneedling devices, be it dermapen or dermarollers, use metal material. On the basis of needle material, the market is segmented into silicon, metal, and glass hollow microneedles. The silicon material segment is estimated to account for the second-highest revenue share by 2028 growing at a CAGR of more than 7.5% from 2021 to 2028.
Regional Insights
In 2020, North America held the largest market share of 41% and will expand further at a steady CAGR from 2021 to 2028. The U.S. accounted for the largest share in the North America regional market. An increase in the number of cosmetic procedures being performed is propelling the product demand in North America. The presence of advanced healthcare facilities & skilled professionals and high disposable income levels are also among the major factors driving the growth of the regional market.
On the other hand, Asia Pacific is anticipated to be the fastest-growing regional market over the forecast period. An increase in the demand for antiaging treatment, a rise in the standard of living, and growing consumer disposable income levels in emerging countries are boosting the market expansion in the Asia Pacific region. In addition, the availability of skilled professionals, advanced techniques, and cheaper treatments are attracting customers from around the world, which is leading to a large number of aesthetic procedures being performed in the region.
Key Companies & Market Share Insights
Primary parameters affecting the competitive nature include technological advancements and rapid adoption of advanced devices for improved treatment. In addition, to retain market shares and diversify product portfolios, major players are frequently undertaking mergers & acquisitions activities. Moreover, the competition between key players will turn intense in the coming years as they are focusing more on geographical expansion, strategic collaborations, partnerships, and product launches.
