Surgeries performed in an ASC setting are short, with faster recovery and low infection rates when compared to hospitals. According to a study published in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, surgeries performed in the ASCs have lower chances of infection, such as pneumonia, UTI, & blood clots, and the requirement of blood transfusion is rare when compared to surgeries in a hospital setting. In another research conducted at Elizabeth Munich and Stephen Parente, it was stated that for the same procedure, the time spent by a patient in an ASC is 25% to 30% lower than a hospital outpatient department. In addition, ASC patients are less likely to visit the hospital just after few days of the surgery. The risk of infection at ambulatory surgery centers is lower in comparison with hospitals. According to CDC, 8.95 per 1,000 patients underwent surgeries in hospitals compared to 4.84 per 1,000 patients in ambulatory surgery centers. As per CDC, the infection rate at hospitals was 1% compared to 0.1 % at ambulatory surgery centers. Low infection rate at ambulatory surgery centers is driving the market growth by increasing preference for these centers.
Ambulatory surgery centers are highly regulated healthcare facilities in the U.S. According to a report by American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, 46 states require licensing of ambulatory surgery centers, wherein each state has different eligibility criteria, with 28 of these states requiring a thirdparty. The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) and Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) are recognized third-parties. There is requirement of a certificate of need in 25 states, wherein an ambulatory surgery center must demonstrate need for new services & construction. For reimbursement by Medicare, ambulatory surgery centers require federal certification from Medicare, wherein the center must demonstrate compliance with applicable laws and Medicare standards. The CMS also requires quality reporting from centers, failing which payment rates are affected. The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association regulates these centers at federal-level and has specific requirements, including level of safety, cleanliness, & service at the facility. Aspects such as stay of patients after surgery and number of patients at a time are also regulated by federal laws. The states also have an operation manual for these centers. Stringent regulations are making it difficult for ambulatory surgery centers to survive and grow. These regulations may restrict new players from entering the market. Thus, stringent regulations are expected to restrict overall market growth.
