Australia Facial Injectable Market Dynamics

Driver: Increasing Beauty Consciousness Among People

The concern about body image among young people in Australia is a significant driver in the demand for cosmetic procedures and beauty products. According to the 2018 Youth Survey Report by Mission Australia, nearly 30.4% of participants were concerned about body image, with around 13.6% reporting to be extremely concerned, while approximately 16.8% of them were very concerned about their body image. The survey also revealed that women (~41.5%) were more concerned about body image as compared to men (~15.4%). Moreover, a 2017 study published in Psychiatry Research reported that nearly 3% of male teenagers in the country were reported to have symptoms of body dysmorphism. Additionally, a 2017 study by Dove found that around 89% of women in the country cancelled job interviews and other important social/professional interactions due to their physical appearance, indicating high beauty consciousness among people, especially women, in the country.

Driver: Shift In Consumer Preference For Minimally Invasive Procedures

The high demand for minimally invasive procedures is a significant driver of market growth in Australia. According to a survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), in 2018, the number of cosmetic procedures performed in Australia was 202,642, out of which 100,238 were nonsurgical. The survey also stated that botulinum toxin filler, hyaluronic acid filler, hair removal nonsurgical fat reduction, and photo rejuvenation were the most common and in-demand noninvasive esthetic procedures in the country, with botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid injections being the highest and second-highest in terms of the number of procedures performed, respectively. Moreover, a survey conducted by Merz Aesthetics along with Costhetics on 1,225 participants revealed that in 2019, around 33% of Australian women (current/likely users) would postpone the purchase of clothes or shoes to pay for injectable treatments, while around 28% would spend at restaurants, nearly 27% would reduce takeaways/coffees, and approximately 18% would undergo fewer treatments to save money for facial injectable. The survey also found that the use of injectables is anticipated to be higher in Australia in the next 10 years.

Restraint: Adverse Effects Associated With Certain Facial Injectables

Facial injectable products, such as Botox, Juvéderm, Zyplast, CosmoPlast Dysport, and Zyderm, are effective for reducing fine lines, wrinkles, slowing down skin aging, and improving overall facial appearance & youthfulness. However, there are potential adverse effects associated with these products. Adverse effects of Botox include rash, allergic reactions, back & neck pain, nausea, and shortness of breath, which can be temporary in most cases and vary from person to person. Hyaluronic acid, another facial injectable, has adverse effects such as itching and inflammation, and repetitive pain associated with multiple injection cycles. A major disadvantage of injectable fillers is that it does not have a permanent effect and wears off in 6 to 18 months, requiring another injection, which in turn increases procedure cost. Moreover, the most worrisome risk associated with injectable fillers is unintentional injection of the fillers into a blood vessel, which can cause blocking of the blood vessels and less blood supply to the tissue leading to permanent damage. Complications include blindness and stroke.
