Driver: Usage of DBS cards in newborn screening

Dried Blood Spot (DBS) specimen collection cards have predominantly been used for newborn screening. Genetic conditions such as phenylketonuria, sickle cell disease, congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, galactosemia, maple syrup urine disease, biotinidase deficiency, and homocystinuria are typically screened using DBS collection cards. As per the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, in the U.S., newborn screening programs screen for more than 60 diseases. In the U.S., Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) consists of a list of disorders that are recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services, mandating screening of certain genetic diseases based on previously collected disease prevalence and incidence data. Newborn screening test panels vary in each U.S. state due to various factors such as administration/council mandate of the state, overall cost of screening and funding assigned to the NBS program, frequency of a given disorder occurrence in the state, and availability of treatments and follow-ups for each disorder in the state. However, conditions differ from state to state. Every state offers specific guidelines on collection, storage, and transportation of sample collection through DBS cards. Newborn screening labs can be equipped with manual, semimanual, or fully automated platforms to extract the sample from DBS. However, the most used techniques are liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and flow injection in the market. The use of DBS cards in newborn screening is anticipated to boost market growth during the forecast period. One of the widely and commonly accepted clinical uses of DBS is next-generation sequencing, which focuses on the detection of metabolic disorders. This method is a faster alternative because it helps avoid retesting infants. Newborn Screening (NBS) testing is critical for early diagnosis of diseases in infants. Restraint: Risk of contamination in DBS collection cards

In some cases, healthcare professionals handling the specimen are exposed to highly infectious disease samples, and drying & containment of these samples are essential.

Technological advancements in the field of blood collection have revolutionized the way diagnostics and sample collection work. For instance, in September 2022, Capitainer, a Swedish startup, announced highly positive results of its qDBS card. It is a volumetric DBS sampling device that showcases accurate outcomes for phenylketonuria. The new technology addresses the concern of the fluctuation in volume and hematocrit of blood in conventional cards. Some examples of such emerging companies with novel products include Neoteryx, Hemaxis, Trajan Scientific & Medical, Owen Mumford, and Seventh Sense Biosystems, Inc.
